REVELL 1/72 Vought F4U-1A Corsair

The Corsair is considered to have been one of the U.S. Navy's best World War 2 fighter aircraft. It was feared by its Japanese opponents who nicknamed it Whistling Death . Corsairs fought in the Pacific theatre from 1943 to 1945, scoring record-breaking successes. The Corsairs combined fire-power consisted of six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns.

The Kit

This is a complete new tool and continues in Revell’s line of 1/72 fighter aircraft
- New mould
- Structured surfaces with recessed panel joints
- Detailed R2800 radial engine
- Cooling valve manifold selectively open or closed
- Detailed cockpit with instrument panel
- 2 Auxiliary fuel tanks
- Movable propeller
- Detailed landing gear
- Decal set for 2 US Navy versions

The instructions....

The instructions are of Revell's usual style in booklet form and have Revell colour call outs only, and again some paints will need mixing. There are 9 pages containing 33 steps for the build.

The decals

These are of Revell usual high standard and are very crisp, and are in good register, included are decals for seatbelts
Markings are for:

- VMF-214 Sqn, USMC Vella Lavella, Solomon Islands, December 1943 ‘Pappy Boyington’

- VF-17 Sqn USN Bougainville, Solomon Islands, Febuary 1944

The Plastic...

When you open the box you will be dazzled by the bright White plastic which makes it difficult to see the finely recess lines, but some of the mouldings look soft and very fragile. The canopy is not separately bagged and although looks thin, would easily break or get scratched how the kits packed

In Conclusion

A Nice little low level kit, but some parts look over engineered for a 1/72 kit, there will be issues with part breakage, getting things off the sprues. This will be in direct competition with the Hobbyboss and Academy kits so im not sure if this was a wise move by Revell

Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For details visit www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/Revell
a new-look Revell website has now gone live at www.revell.de/en. It’s a worthwhile newspiece as it’s very different from before!

Another nice review Mark and a treat to see the option of open or close cooling flaps.

What did I miss? Oooh corsairs! I had a look at this kit in the flesh the other day briefly. There are a couple of good things with it that only tamiya have done before, no floor in the cockpit for example. The moulds look to have been made with the option of building other variants, such as a part for the .50s which could be swapped for canons, wing tip pieces which suggest a faa option in the pipeline and if you didn't have the framing on the canopy you could make the d. Im not sure off the top of my head if you could model the birdcage with just a change of canopy. Ill get some this weekend at our show.

One thing I need to check is that it looks like they used a fg-1 corsair as references, the Goodyear version, as some parts just don't seem right for an F4U-1a. Like i say I need to check that though. Oh yeah and that prop is awful! The cord is too fat and the hub is really small.

I'll get hold of one and do some side by side comparisons with for example the fuselage halves of this kit and the other 1/72 options available. I think I have them all now apart from this new release

I don't believe so. The gear bays were painted the same colour as the underside of the aircraft as they sprayed them at the same time.

Unfortunately no trades at the Brampton show thought the Corsair was worth selling so i've yet to get one to review against the other 1/72 competitors

Ah right ok. I've not seen the kit myself as I would like to do a few as it was my late Father's favourite aircraft
