Airfix 1/48 Gnat T.1

Just got my sweaty paws onto the Airfix 1/48 Gnat T.1 at last.

Developed as a small lightweight and manoeuvrable fighter, the Folland Gnat was never accepted into the RAF service in that role. However, after being re-designed with 2 seats, it found its niche as a superb trainer and its small size and excellent aerobatic capability made it a natural choice for the RAF's aerobatic teams. The Yellowjacks first used the gnat to great effect, before the Red Arrows used it as their first aircraft. Designed by W. E. W. Petter, the Gnat entered RAF service in 1962 giving trainee pilots the perfect first experience of fast jets before they moved onto the Hunters and Lightnings they would fly on front line duties. Eventually the introduction of the Hawk jet trainer meant the end for the Gnat and they were phased out of RAF service in the late 1970's. A large number were however passed to private operators where they still continue to be displayed at air shows.

Airfix are releasing 2 kits of the diminutive Gnat. The trainer and the Red Arrows version. The kit contains 96 parts in pale blue and clear plastic. Options include raised or dropped flaps, open or closed upper nose compartment, open or closed canopy, raised or lowered undercarriage. The kit retails for 16.99 which I think is good value for this small kit measuring out at 230mm long, 153mm span. Decals printed by Cartograf.

On my wants list for Telford! Been waiting for this since the 1/72 one came out (and I complained to Mr Airfix that it was too small!)

I will be building a couple of these. I drive past the Hornby factory shop twice every day and it's frustrating for me as the kit isn't available there yet!

I want to build a Red Arrows airframe first but I may simply build this release early and paint it red, and wait for the Red Arrows boxing to appear to get the decals onto it in quick time. Build a trainer or a Yellowjacks airframe with that second model.

Just a quickie - in each case, what did the driver's flight overalls look like for the Gnat in the Red Arrows and for the Yellowjacks liveries? Anyone know definitively?

Reds still wore Red flight suits back then. I don't know about the Yellowjacks, but I would make the assumption that they wore standard flight gear for the period (blue/grey overalls, white helmet?)
