Revell (Dragon) 1/48.

The Fw 190 was a nightmare to build, but the Ta 154 was a dream......

Really nice builds to look at!

One question: In photos of this type of combination, the upper aircraft often has the undercarriage down rather than up. As it would probably reduce drag and give more available power with it up, is there a reason why this was done?

I can only assume the undercarriage retraction is linked between both aircraft. i.e, to cut down on duplicate controls, when u/c up is selected, both a/c retract their u/c.
The instructions actually show to have the FW's u/c up (not showing the fitment for down.) but like you say, most photos show it down.

They'll have a job....it weighs a ton!! :whistle It has over 150g of weight in the nose and nacelles. I'm surprised that nose leg can bear the weight in fact....
