There's no build thread for this one - just a quick 2 day construction as it's such a simple kit. I'll include some points to note for Gnat builders at the end, and be warned - there's an almost WHIF element to this one!

Now I'm on a "colourful" build kick at the moment and this is where the WHIF element comes along...

In my world, this jet is ready for its delivery flight to RAF Valley to join the Yellowjacks team and have smoke pipes fitted, so a pair of ferry tanks was needed to get it there. Although the team had yellow tanks once established, this jet borrowed a couple from a standard line aircraft for the trip - so red is the colour!

To end with, I'm not trying to be a Gnat expert by a long way, so please take the following with a pinch of salt. :whistle

1. It's a great kit. The fit is good all round.

2. Be careful handling the main undercarriage until it's fitted and set - it would be easy to break it.

3. Don't be too lazy (like me) to paint the canopy interior framing - the canopy is so clear that it WILL be noticeable.

4. I had no problem with the tanks. Be careful lining the parts up. I used a little filler here.

5. To fit the tanks, I only drilled out the forward mount hole. I cut off the rear mounting peg. Fitting the front peg to the wing, I gently swung the tank around until it was aligned.

6. My nose gear door is at the incorrect angle - check reference pictures before fitting!

I've been looking forward to this kit for a while and enjoyed the build - the first of a few...

Regards,

Nigel

Cracking!! I must get mine finished! I know what you mean tho, it's a lovely little kit, as all Airfix's latest offerings seem to be. So easy to put together.

What sort of yellow did you use, enamel or acrylic?

The yellow on this one is Humbrol 69 Acrylic, sprayed from an aerosol can.
It dries very quickly and seems quite tough.

I confess that I don't know if it's the historically "correct" Yellowjack colour but as I've mentioned on occasion, I'm not too fussy about accuracy!

The red is Volkswagen Mars Red, also from an aerosol. I usually use this for Red Arrows colouring.

A nice finish.

The 1:72 Yellow Jack I made earlier this year took several coats of enamel and doesn't quite look good enough in my opinion.

Thanks.
