The guys had jumpers but only blue knitted ones that mum usually made for them and they were permitted to wear. If they are working around an armed aircraft then all of them should be wearing helmets and not chip hats. Also none of them has a jerkin on, the leather jacket worn over Battlefield dress to provide some 'protection' and then a belt went around that. When I eventually do my 1/72 D-day Typhoon dio, all of the figures will need modifying to make them anything close to accurate. |

Oh and RAF Regt wore Berets but that was it for the blue lot. They wore the same battle dress as the army with the blue beret. I've picked up all sorts of info over the last 2 years doing re-enacting as well as the day job in blue. |

The research I did when doing my 1/24 Hurricane, it seems that leather jerkins were worn mainly by armourers. Other trades wore coveralls in either white, blue, black or khaki. Initially trades stuck to a certain colour, ie, fairy's wore white, heavys wore darker colours. But as the war went on then they wore whatever they could get hold of. I've never seen pics of guys wearing helmets on aircraft, but I generally look at early war pics. Pics I have seen of them wearing chipbags are, in my opinion, staged. Having seen a lot if pics that are obviously more natural with the guys in shirtsleeves and hatless. |
