Several rumour sticks here, so doubtless I've got the wrong end of at least one of them, but the rumours were that either Fleming's Widow retained the rights to the use of the name 'Ernst Stavro Blofeld' for possible use in future books which naturally the royalties would pass back to her estate. She died in recent years so if she objected to selling the rights I don't know, but I think that timing has something to do with it. Although the owner and beneficiary of the character name could possibly have been the James Bond estate itself. (If that's the right name for it). I think the Film makers have been in careful legal negotiation to buy the rights to that name to use in association with James Bond outings and that legal agreement was finalised a few months ago. If they've worked that hard to buy the name, I doubt that they'll leave it unused. My guess he'll be played by Christopher Waltz here. |

Laughing aside, that estate could well be able to block even that. They had a veto over the name of the final Austin Powers film 'Goldenmember' but allowed them to continue 'in good faith'. The Film makers of the series are extremely protective of the brand - Tarantino was negotiating to film 'Casino Royale' whilst the royalties for that title lay elsewhere with different studio owners. |
