The French / British Jaguar all weather ground attack fighter aircraft has been in service with the Royal Air Force and the Armée de l'Air since 1973. It completed its maiden flight in 1968. The RAF ordered 165 Jaguar GR.1's. The aircraft quickly earned a very a good reputation for its precise navigation and weapons delivery. The British version was also equipped with a laser rangefinder, an automatic target designation system and computer navigation. Eight RAF Squadrons were equipped with the Jaguar, six of which were stationed in Germany. The Jaguar was successfully deployed in the Gulf War Zone from 1990 and returned home with no losses. The last Jaguars were decommissioned in 2007.

The Kit

This is a re-release of the 1994 Airfix / Heller issue of the Jaguar. This is a surprise to most modellers seeing Revell Re-pop Airfix kits, but this wont be the only one, there are more on the cards. Up until the last couple of years this has been the only Jaguar on the market. Since then Kitty hawk has released there kits but some believe they are over engineered and too complex. Italeri keep whispering there offering but it still remains a unreleased mystery. This kit however does build into an impressive model and there is a wide range of after market products already available for it

- Structured surfaces with recessed panel joints
- Detailed cockpit with instrument panel
- Detailed undercarriage
- Air-brakes open or closed
- 2 external fuel tanks
- Reconnaissance pod
- 2 Sidewinder guided missiles
- Bombs

The instructions....

These are the normal Revell booklet style with 12 pages covering the 31 steps of the build, the Paints are in Revell callouts only and some require mixing

The decals

These are very clean and crisp and in perfect register with minimal excess on each decal
Markings are for:

- SEPECAT Jaguar GR.1, No.54 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Coltishall, England, Mach 1979
- SEPECAT Jaguar GR.1A, No.41 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Coltishall, England, September 1987

The Plastic...

The grey plastic is beginning to show its age, the molds have small amounts of flash and they arnt as crisp as one would expect of new tools. The panel lines are quite wide and have soft edges.

In Conclusion

This is a very welcome re-release from Revell and it will be interesting to see what other Airfix / heller kits they release in the future. However a 1/32 Jaguar following in Revells 1/32 modern jets line would have been more welcome, but all in all a good kit for the price tag

Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For details visit www.revell.de/en, @RevellGermany or facebook.com/Revell

This isn't really a repop of the Airfix kit, as the Airfix kit is a Heller kit, and as Revell seem to be repopping a lot of Heller kits at the moment....

Anyway, it's not so bad. You want to see bad, wait till I get around to my old Esci Jaguar.....

If memory hasn't been blurred by the mists of time, Heller bought out the 'A' and Airfix followed with the GR.Mk 1 but may be the other way around as to whom came first. Moulding always looked more like Airfix than Heller though to my eyes.

Only going from memory since I owned an Airfix Jag many moons ago, but never built it. As far as I remember, the upper wings were separate left\right mouldings, rather than the single piece here. The initial release comprised a boxtop with a British-marked Jag (it was pre-service era) with the pointed nose. The laser modded nose appeared in the airfix box around 1975'ish.

The sprues resemble Heller's style more closely and certainly the Airfix moulding comprised their standard crew figure so I'd say this was the Heller tool.

You're thinking of the 1/72 one.

Aha.

Mark slyly concealed the scale by putting it up at the top clearly in a picture. Cunning.
