Revell 1/72 Concorde British Airways![]() ![]() Described by the press as the Queen of the Skies , the Concorde supersonic passenger aircraft was in regular service from 1976 until 2003. With a top speed of Mach 2.2 (2400 km/h - 1490 mph), Concorde flew faster than all its competitors and reduced the flight time between Europe and the USA by 50%. A total of 18 Concorde's took to the air for almost 30 years in service with British Airways and Air France until they were sent into retirement in mid-2003 for economic reasons. The main reason was the reducing numbers of passengers, high running costs (charter price 30,000 Euro per hour) and high fuel consumption (25,680 litres - 5900 gallons / hour) 4 times more than normal jets. The 100 passengers however could enjoy pure luxury and on a clear day had a unique view of the earth's curvature at an altitude of 18 km (60000 ft). British Airways used Concorde twice daily on the London - New York route (flight time under 3 ˝ hours), and once a week to Barbados. The last flight took place on 23 November 2003. In addition to its record performance in supersonic flight the advances in aviation technology and the successful joint development and production of Concorde by Aérospatiale and the British Aircraft Corporation are also worthy of mention. The Kit This is a re-release of the 2004 AIRFIX kit, yes i said AIRFIX, this kit was then rereleased in 2005, 2008 and then the moulds were sold to heller in 2010. These now appear to have been sold again to Revell. There have been a lot of online reviews of this kit which have brought up a number of various shape and accuracy issues with this kit. The reviews also mentioned the various fit problems with this kit. The fuselage is divided into 3 sections, and each section had a left and right halves, if not assembled carefully, a lot of diameter discrepancies will occur that need a lot of filling and sanding. The dropable radome is designed to be movable, but you're better off just gluing it in either the up or down position. The wing root area was also aggravating because the long seam is located right inside a recess, hence making filling and sanding extremely difficult. For reasons unbeknownst to me, Heller/Airfix decide to not mould the leading tip on the underside of the wing root. It's not a manufacturing defect or "short shot", it simply wasn't in the original mould. - Structured surfaces, recessed panel joints - Detailed cockpit - Seats, control column, instrument panel - Optional use of an active nose lowering mechanism - Partition walls in the fuselage - Detailed undercarriage bay - Detailed tail - Detailed undercarriage - Tyres with separate wheel rims - Detailed engine bays - Detailed jet exhausts - Separate ruder and flaps - Antennae - Large display stand ![]() The instructions.... These are the normal Revell booklet style with 16 pages covering the 64 steps of the build, the Paints are in Revell callouts only and some require mixing. However i would suggest in investing in a Rattle can of white paint!! (Halfords white primer and then a top coat of Halfords appliance white) ![]() ![]() The decals These are very clean and crisp and in perfect register with minimal excess on each decal Markings are for: British Airways with various registrations (does this mean the will be another boxing with Air France?) ![]() The Plastic... There is a mix of white, silver, clear and black plastic with the majority being white (well it is Concorde). The plastic is quite soft and care will have to be taken removing it from the sprues, the also appears to be a little flash in places. My biggest concern for this is the soft plastic warping and causing fit / alignment problems. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In Conclusion This is a very welcome re-release of an Airfix Kit in a Blue box, having seen several of these built they do look stunning. This is not an easy build by all accounts and care and attention will be needed. However this kit would benefit from a lighting kit (are you listening Warren?) to make it into a stunning model. Not one for a beginner but one for anyone with a bit of experience filling and sanding! Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. I've been after a 1/72 Concorde for a while. I'll definitely get hold of one. Singapore markings tempt me, so maybe 2

I'm listening Mr Marples, I already have a copy of the Airfix instructions so if it is the same kit I might move it up the 2015 build list. Cheers, Warren |

Thanks for the look Mark, I believe it was initially a Heller release that was re-popped by Airfix. Can't think of any kits that have been swapped directly between the two. |

Like i've mentioned before, i've got it for FS2004. You could record from the program and that way set what times you want the sound to play in relation to the burner lights. |

Steve, can the sound be downloaded as a .wav file form the simulator as this would be better than trying to record it through speakers. I've found a number of sites that have aircraft sound files so will have a play with that once the SD card reader arrives. Cheers, Warren |
