Revell 1/72 Saab JAS-39C Gripen ![]() ![]() The Saab JAS-39 Gripen is one of the most modern single-engine multi-purpose combat aircraft, and has been in mass production since 1995. It is characterized by high reliability, manoeuvrability and ease of maintenance. It was also designed to take-off and land from rough strips and roads. The current C-Model which is in use with the Swedish Air Force is also used by 3 other Air Forces. The Kit This is a new tool recent release of the `C` model and includes, - Structured surfaces with recessed panel joints - Detailed cockpit with instrument panel - Detailed undercarriage - Air-brakes open or closed - 2 external fuel tanks - Reconnaissance pod - Air to Air Missiles - Anti Ship Missiles The Instuctions Booklet As with all instruction booklets produced by Revell this can appear to be very `busy`. While I don`t doubt that the experienced modeler will look past this and crack on with the build, a less experienced modeler may feel a little daunted by how crowded everything seems to be. Overall though it is well structured and methodical in it`s approach. ![]() The Sprues Minimal flash with a decent level of detail and options. An example being air brakes open. The clear sprue parts are clear and in good order. A possible downside to this new tool is again looking at it from a `newbie` point of view. Most standard kits have two fuselage halves that you stick together and the jobs done. As you can see from the following shots this kit really is in a lot of pieces and would probably suit the more experienced plastic basher. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Decals The level of detail on these decals is excellent and are up to the usual Revell standard we are becoming accustomed to. ![]() In Conclusion This is a very decent offering from Revell of a Gripen `C` and will no doubt be an instant hit with any modelers out there who are Gripen fans and want to fill that hole in their collection. My only concern is with the skill level needed to produced a fine model with this kit. In my opinion, experienced modelers will have no problem making it and find it a lot of fun doing it to boot. I can`t shake the feeling that less experienced modelers will open it up, take a look and then place it back in their stash to gather a bit of dust. As you all know, I`m a 1/48 modeler, but very early next year, I will proceed to make this kit OOB and post a build review to go with it. When it`s completed, I may have to eat my words. Until then....... Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. I've always liked the Gripen. This is definitely on my wish list as 1/72 is my scale. Thanks for the review. |
