![]() ![]() Revell 1/ 72 Saab JAS-39C Gripen Build Review Some of you may of noticed my lack of posts recently and that`s simply because I wanted to do a full build review from start to finish without any breaks in it. This is the 1/72 scale version of the Gripen `C`. For me personally, this is a bit of a step backwards, as I much prefer the larger 1/48 scales. As I get older I find the strain on my eyes and my chubby fingers are not the best they have been and to give you an idea of the size of the kit parts, here`s a 5p `to scale` picture...., ![]() As you can see there is some level of detail and the kit has cockpit display decals if you so wish to use them. As I mentioned above, this isn`t my scale and does not fit in my collection. However there was one member of the family that this would be perfect for...., my 3 year old. This was confirmed with a big smile when I showed him the box and told him I was making this for him to add to his growing collection of aeroplanes. This also means that once complete, this Revell kit will go through a period of `destruction testing`.... This also meant that the kit will be finished with the wheels up and in clean configuration. (It`s never nice to step on `that` missing missile first thing in the morning )If you recall I mentioned that this kit looks a little too complicated with too many parts to be fitted when a single piece might be just as good. I still think this is the case, however I did find that while it all looks complicated, it is in actual fact pretty simple once you get started. Appearances in this case can be deceptive. ![]() ![]() So all these parts, once assembled in the correct order, ended up looking like this....., ![]() You may require a bit of filler with the finished assembly which is another reason why we should ask if having so many bits is a good thing or not. Saying that, the fit is generally good. I also dug out a pilot from the spares box which then needed a bit of `trimming` to fit into the seat. The end product was this......, ![]() ![]() The decals are very nice, look the part and went on well enough. I would say however that the tail decals are over sized and some trimming was needed. Now it`s not perfect and that is down to me the builder and not the manufacturer. But at the end of the day, it`s not a case of if I made it well or not. It`s about finding out if the `client` likes it or not. So did he..?? Well, I think the following picture sums it up. ![]() ...... and you know you have done well if he wants to take it to bed with him. Conclusion Ok..., so this probably wasn`t my best build and the build itself was not based on the usual build reviews you may see elsewhere. But I can say with reasonable judgement that I did enjoy making this kit. It looks more complicated than it is and would be an interesting challenge to the 1/72 builder to make it look perfect. Right..., that`s it from me and I`m off to Specsavers for some glasses. (Mark..., 1/48 or bigger next time please.... )If you have any further questions for me about this kit, let me know. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. It actually looks pretty good Tony so don't worry and the client of course always has the last word, I've never had a client who wanted to take his model to bed with him, plastic model that is. I used an optivisor for some time until I finally needed reading glasses and now don't use the optivisor. |

I like it...and it's quite big compared to some of the stuff I've been doing lately. |

looks good to me, I have the same issues now days with 1/72! I guess the split of the main parts is to allow for a possible two seater at some point however I too get frustrated at manufacturers who seem to think a high parts count is a positive selling feature, Revell do seem guilty of this more than some.
