Totally Tonkas Bonkas !!
Used to visit Wyton at least once a year whilst staying at Quietwaters Caravan Park in nearby Hemmingford Abbots.
Another RAF station with tons of history becomes a thing of the past :-(

I really bit my tongue about this this week and am going to struggle writing this. I work at Wyton and am one of those 'personnel' that Squadron Leader Rich Kellett apparently is messaging (that is the first i've heard of his message btw, by chance on a MMM thread!!!!). I heard by rumour on Thursday that the Tutors had gone on Wednesday. All I knew was that they were flying on Wednesday when I heard engines running when coming back from the mess. How was the end of flying permanently marked at a station that has been operating aircraft since 1916? Well a few crows flew over whilst the station personnel carried on oblivious! :bang:

Last year, when the airfield was meant to close, I put forward the idea of having a flying display on the airfield during the families day as a send off to the airfield and in memory of those who had served, the Pathfinder force for example. Sqn Ldr Kellet (you know that guy who apparently has messaged us) decided that we couldn't have the airfield as he wanted to fly that day and wasn't going to support the families day! I asked for a budget to see if I could get some visiting acts and was offered £500! I couldn't get a bloody ice cream van with that! We had a BBMF Spitfire do a very poor display, albeit nowhere near us as it had to stay away from the Tutors!

Now that the Tutors have gone i'm not holding my breath that Wyton will stay RAF Wyton for long. It's already been JFC run for a while and will go the way that Brampton did and become JFC Wyton. Doubt anyone will tell us though! :rant One of the main reasons I decided to sign the dotted line was the RAF ethos and history and I wanted to be part of it, following in both my grandads footsteps. When things such as this happen it makes me feel so much better about my decision to put in my notice (PVR) as the reasons I chose to join don't exist any more. No kit, no money, no bases, no benefits, army run and a hierarchy that couldn't give a toss about its heritage!

Well I think i've ranted enough this evening, i'll shut up now

We're still there. It's just the airfield that's gone. The rest of the camp is expanding, albeit it's full of Royal Engineers now and us in blue are the minority...

This was mt first station out of training in 87. I lived in a married quarter for singlies behind the NAAFI shop on the roundabout. St Ives more too often for a Pizza. Aircraft movements were great with the F-5's over head and the early morning arrivals of the TR-1's.

FTS,

There are times that the RAF seem to lose their sense of style and panache. To mark the end of military flying from a famous station with a whimper seems to be the way of things now.

PM inbound.
