![]() The Ar 196 gained fame as the on-board catapult launch aircraft of the German Navy's capital ships in WW2. The configuration used was a twin float design, however a single float design with outrigger support floats was tested, the 'B' model. Only built as test models, they provided much useful test data. Ar 196 V4, carrying the registration D-OVMB was used as a weapons test platform for the MG FF machine gun and for under wing bomb racks. It was tested in the Bay of Lubeck and later Travemunde. The aircraft was fitted with a ventral float containing a fuel tank, 2 smoke dischargers and emergency provisions and additional ammunition. On Dec 8 1938, the V4 aircraft caught fire after an unsuccessful take-off attempt in heavy seas. Powered by a 9 cylinder air-cooled BMW radial engine. The kit comes in the standard end opening Revell box. ![]() Instructions are the usual clear Revell booklet. ![]() ![]() The sprues are similar to the previous issue, with the exception of the landing gear. ![]() ![]() 2X these ones ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There doesn't look to be enough canopy here, but time will tell... ![]() Only one option on the decals, D-OVMB, the test aircraft for the weapons. ![]() Finished in RLM 02, I personally think this is a nice alternative to the usual greens and greys seen on WW2(ish) Luftwaffe aircraft A stand is provided to display the aircraft, so the wings can still be built folded, as with the twin float version. I am looking forward to building this kit, so watch out for the build review in the next few weeks. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers.
