The C-47 is one of the most legendary aircraft in the history of aviation. The DC-3 appeared in 1935 as a further development of the DC-2. The C-47 freighter version emerged later. During the Vietnam War specially rebuilt C-47's entered service as attack gunships from 1964 onwards. Now known as the AC-47D and nicknamed Puff the Magic Dragon these aircraft were used to deliver concentrated fire support for beleaguered outpost and camps. Within a very short period of time the AC-47D became one of the most feared weapons in the Vietnam War. Together the three mini-guns were capable of delivering a devastating 18,000 rounds per minute. There have been numerous reports about deployments of the AC-47D showing that hard fought over locations were relieved by continued aerial actions of the AC-47D. Codenamed Spooky the AC-47D remained in USAF service until 1969.

The Kit

This is a re-release of the 1978 Revell Monograme kit, This kit has been release several times in several guises, as a gun ship, a airliner, and a military transport (d-day). However this kit is showing its age, with raised panel lines and plenty of flash on the sprues. However its the only 1/48 Dakota! On the market.

In Conclusion

This kit is really showing its age the quality of the mouldings are out dates and the kit has poor raised lines, however its the only one out there and can be built into a stunning model. Be aware though its a beast at 40 x 60cm its a big model. As this is a re-release there is already a lof of aftermarket extras out there, and the potential to super detail is nearly as big as the kit. Im not sure is mine will be a gunship or D-Day aircraft (using am decals) but either way a welcome release!

Oooh this brings back memories.

I built the original Monogram C-47 kit back in the dark ages for a mate then went on to build 2 more of which one was my own gunship conversion which was built as a RAF example (his money) and an Aussie variant which still resides down under I believe.

Nice review Mark but does it have the original Elsan type bog and sink included.
