Welcome to one of two `interactive` build reviews or Revell kits.

Why interactive?

Well it`s a bit of a long story, but bare with me.

When I got home from this years Cockpit Fest, my children eyed up the kits I brought home and ear marked `their` models that daddy was going too build for them.

Now I don`t mind them usually doing this, after all I do enjoy watching them help me make a model in their own way. But on this occasion I did sit them down and say that while I was happy to give them the models once completed, I was going to build them as intended and they would have to wait.

This also means that I have to multi task and build both kits at the same time as you can imagine the Top Gear style `fracas` if one of my kids got their model before the other. It kind of reminds me of that scene from the battle of Britain film when Ian McShane visits his family in London and hands the big kid the big Spitfire and the little kid the little Spitfire. How on earth did he get away with that? I different time I suppose. Anyway I digress.

So over the next week or so I`m going to be building both and it gives you guys the chance to see my progress and ask any questions along the way. I know what your thinking.., it`s just a standard WIP isn`t it?

In short the answer is yes. But our friends at Revell always like to see, quite rightly, one of their kits being built by an average modeller and hopefully highlighting the good and bad of their product.

So with no further ado, lets make a start.....,

Now I haven`t done a sprue review but I can show you the detail and recessed panels lines. All good stuff.

The seats are also detailed and come in 4 parts.

The next post will show the cockpit tubs and aircrew.

I have one in the loft, not the gaudy one like this, but mine comes with weapons so one to follow with a great deal of interest.

In case you are interested the airframe grey is FS36270 Neutral Grey and not Dark Sea grey as others have published elsewhere.

Cheers Del for the heads up with regards to paint. :cool

I probably should of mentioned that both this and the F-18 will eventually end up as what if`s, but more on that later.

Ok, on to the cockpits.

Firstly the kit does not come with aircrew so a raid in the spares box was in order. This in turn meant that `amputations` were in order so that they fit.

The detail in the cockpits is pretty good and with a bit of time and care you could really do it justice. For me personally though, just a quick rough paint job will suffice.

Still all WIP, but hope to have these finished and fitted by this evening.

Totally Tonkas Bonkas !!
Best Revell kit I have ever made was the Rafale M and this is just as good .
Stick it in a Tamiya/Hasegawa box and you wouldnt know the difference ....that good.

Plenty of test fitting later and I`ve now got the fuselage in good order.

Adding aircrew created a problem as they were interfering with getting the canopy to fit snug, but that was my choice and not the kits fault.

Also not that you need not worry about adding ballast yet. I`ve left this out for later to see if you do actually need it.

On closer inspection there are still a few minor gaps that need to be sorted out but nothing major.

That's pretty much the time consuming part of the build finished, although you could if you wanted spend so much more time on it if you wanted.

Now for the wings and tail.

Having only built the HobbyBoss one (my Galgal conversion) I did find that ballast was a must so wouldn't think this is any different.

Today`s update.

Have to say this kit is going together very well. A few gaps here or there as mentioned before, but nothing serious.

I looked at both sets of sprues this morning and you can always tell how new a kit is as the Rafale still has loads of stuff to add while the F-18 sprues are pretty bare.

More soon.

.... and much to Del`s delight, another `grey` jet is nearing completion...

Now bare in mind two things here.

First, the scheme is not the correct `grey` but that`s because I`m taking the opportunity to complete this model as a `what if`.

Secondly I have not added all the extra little bits and pieces that you get with the kit. A good example of this in the internal canopy framework you can add.
Remember this is ultimately for the kids and I expect to be carry out super glue repairs to both kits within the first 48 hours of their `in service` dates.

I`d rather keep these little extras in the spares box and possibly add them to any future whif projects or in case and forum member needs them in the future.

As with the F-18, gloss coat followed by decals. (what will they be I wonder??) :empire

That's one beautiful shade of Grey and it looks very good Tony, shame it has to be for the kids though.
