The B-1B is still one of the largest, fastest and most advanced long-range bombers in the USAF and forms the backbone of the Strategic Air Command. The swing-wing bomber is capable of carrying a 34 ton weapon load internally as well as 26 tons externally. It has a range of 12,000 km (7452 miles) at high altitude and can penetrate deep into enemy territory. The B-1B successfully withstood its baptism of fire in Operation Desert Fox in the war against Iraq. As planned successor to the B-52 the B-1A undertook its maiden flight in 1977 but then the program was delayed. The first B-1B was delivered to the USAF on 27.07.1985. The radar irradiation surface of the B-1B is only 25% that of the B-52. The weapon load has also been increased enormously. In three internal weapons bays both cruise missiles, guided missiles on a rotating bomb-bay system and conventional bombs can be carried.
The four GE F-101 engines each generate a thrust of 13,620 kg with afterburner. The maximum speed at an altitude of 10,600 metres (35,000 ft) is 1324 Km/h (822 mph).

The Kit

First Released in 1983, this is the biggest injection kit ive ever seen, i have had and built the 1/72 B-52 and i can safely say this is bigger!! , you will see from some of the following photos how big she is compared to a 1/48 hawk. The kit itself is a large amount of crisp grey plastic, and considering its age there is very little flash on the sprue's. Surprisingly for its age this kit offers recess panel lines and has been upgraded for its original release now adding the missing vortex generators, made from the sprue tabs. As this is a re-release there are a wealth of builds out there in cyber space, and a common theme is the mix of really good and really bad fits of certain parts, however as the size of the kit is shall we say large, you may want to stock up on filler for the not so good joints! Something of note and not something is remember seeing on the original boxing is the tinted windows, this is a true representation of the real thing. There is also a wealth of detail in the cockpit and bomb bays and the potential to exploit this to make a stunning model.

Now the bad bit, this is a huge box of plastic and sadly the way they are packaged has led to this, please revell come up with a Solution for this.

The instructions....

These are the normal Revell booklet style with 18 pages covering the 91 steps of the build, the Paints are in Revell callouts only and some require mixing. However i would suggest in investing in a Rattle can of grey paint!

The decals
These are very clean and crisp and in perfect register with minimal excess on each decal (sadly they are a bit crumpled)
Markings are for:
- Rockwell B-1B Lancer, 77 Weapons Squadron, USAF Weapons School, Dyess AFB, Texas, October 2012
- Rockwell B-1B Lancer, 116 Bomb Wing, Georgia Air National Guard, Robins AFB, Georgia, July 2000

In Conclusion

This is a very welcome re-release of an VERY big kit, my only concern is the weight of the kit on the undercaridge however SAC have already producecd a white metal replacement to take the strain. There are fit issues with the kit but nothing a experienced modeller cant handle. The only issue you will have is where to put it! Shame the RAF didnt have any of these :whistle

Not one for a beginner but one for anyone with a bit of experience filling and sanding!
