A question of displays....

We were talking last night after Sarah had spent the day cleaning up the spare room. She asked how attached I was to my man cave......immediately I was worried......but, it turns out she had had the idea of making my little room a "guest room" and the bigger spare room a "craft room".
The idea being we could do all our stuff in there, models, steampunk, she can have her sewing machine permanently out, etc.
But, the question arose as to where I would display my completed models. The glass cabinet I have would go downstairs... :cool , but Sarah thought if possible we could fit angled shelves all the way around the top of the room and if I can figure out some sort of fixing method, have my models on them.

Now, here's the question. I need a method to hold aircraft on a shelf mounted at up to 45 deg, that doesn't interfere with the kit, cause stress on the undercarriage, can be universally fitted, and allows removal for shows without visible traces.

The only thing I can think of is to fit a tube into the underside of all future kits and mount a rod in the shelf to hold in place. It has drawbacks in that current kits can't me modified this way, only future builds (space allowing) and that the shelf would have to have lots and lots of holes drilled in it to allow th post to be fitted in the right place for different sized aircraft......

Can anyone else thing of any other suggestions, or even other ways to display?

interesting question, the rod is the most obvious solution,
how about using fishing line/invisible wire wrap it around the top of the kit and through (tiny) holes in the shelf and tie it off underneath?

can you put a lip on the shelves that the landing gear could lean on ie not lip off the shelf

Sarah suggested "chocks" under the wheels, but I would worry with some aircraft that the weight would be too much for the u/c to cope with at such an angle......My poor old F-105 has enough of a job standing upright on level ground, lol

I assume you want them pointing nose out and down!

Rod up the rear part of the fuselage, drilling won't interfere with the paint etc. if you drill a small pilot hole first and open up carefully then use clear sprue/perspex or similar secured by drilling and securing with epoxy into the shelf but leave fuselage end unglued. No strain on the undercarriage then and they can be replaced when need be.

The other answer re fine fishing line tied around a screw and and looped around the tailplanes would also work.

The rod method gets my vote as it eliminates all strain on the undercarriage and by using rod of different lengths, you can mount some models "low" and some "higher", thereby fitting more models onto the shelves by overlapping.

The rod method means having a hole in the underside of the model, but how many times are you likely to display a model so that people can see underneath? It's also good for painting!

i actually started using nuts in mine with the right thread to fit them onto a camera tripod.
i bought some REALLY cheap mini tripods aswell and it works great.
i can pose them however i like within reason

That is a brilliant idea and one which I will investigate.

I couldn't display my models in the modelling room as it gets way too dusty, and spraying paint puts a thin film over everything too.

However to mount on a 45 degree shelf how about using the smallest size picture eyes (or even hooks) these are threaded so would self tap into a hole at the rear of the model, another into the top of the shelf and join them with some fine fishing line. Two possible advantages, firstly some of tne weight is transferred backwards to the hook on the shelf thus reducing stress on the landing gear and secondly if you later change your display method removing the hook from the model will just leave a small hole to touch up.

Or a picture hook in the rear bottom of the aircraft and a fishing line 'arrester wire' along the top of the shelf?

I actually rather like Dels suggestion of fishing line looped round the tail as it leves the model unmolested. If he come up with any more of these perhaps we should remove his 'Doh' award?

Blimey Si, take it easy old mate or you'll embarrass me. John's original idea but I took it a step further with a screw.

been many a mans undoing that

heres another display mount i made by sticking rods up the models chuff and suitable holes in the backplate, i do have an idea for a rotating backplate so you only have 1 set of holes in it but havnt built that yet.
also its doable to put an adjustable nut to set the pitch angle for heavy models aswell

My storage problem is partially solved by the fact that I've never built a model yet that I consider to be of a standard worth displaying at home. The ones I keep for shows like CockpitFest are in boxes and once displayed, normally don't see the light of day again. This means that I don't have to put shelves up, so there is an up side to it.

I just knew it when I typed the word that somebody would turn it around..............

Nice not to be disappointed. :yipee

Nigel, with all your truly excellent models that you feel are good enough for shows I really am surprised that you don't have any out at home. Get them out into the air.........................................

If you wanted to dispose of some get in touch with Graham (Blue_2), he has a mate who is building up a display at the museum that Graham helps out in, also been known to take the odd one from me for resurrection rather than binning them.

The trouble with tripods is that most of my aircraft are big. Plus, I tend to build them at rest, often with the canopy open....

Thank you all for the suggestions. I think a combination of several ideas will be put in place, depending on the aircraft in question.

Been told I have to start packing up my room soon, so we can move it around. It looks like the stash will be returning to the attic, and a big sort out is on the cards.....
