Just making my intention clear with the Lightning GB. Haven`t even bought the kit yet...! Lightning F.1 XM141 flown by Flt Lt Jim Burns was flying number four in the box and it was a high speed flypast towards the airfield probably at 500/550knots. Jim got high and close into the jet wash of the lead aircraft when the incident occurred and the tail seperated. Fortunately the aircraft remained controllable and Jim (using aileron control) landed it safely at Colt. English Electric's conclusion was that it was the effects of aerodynamic pressure which had built up during the course of the four aircraft's high speed low level manoeuvre which had exposed a structural weakness and caused the rudder and part of the fin to sheer off. ![]() I`m looking forward to this.

Will your model include the brown mess in the cockpit Tony? |

The pilot figure will obviously be blocking the view of any kind of modelling poop I add, but I`ll bare it in mind Del.

I like the idea of projects such as this. It's quite satisfying when someone states with an air of authority that "It can't be right, that never happened" only to backpedal when the photo is shown to them. |

Great story. I Love to see models with stories. When I was a member of the Quarter Scale Group, we used to have themes for our displays, and all models had to have a story. It was great to see people come along to shows and read the stories. |

This morning I reviewed and completed the `surgery` on the tigers tail. One thing I noticed was the different positions of the tigers head in relation to the fin flash on the black tailed version and the silver tailed Lightning. This meant that to be on the safe side, I had to draw the fin flash on a bit of masking tape stuck to the fin so that the cuts were made in the right place. ![]() ..... and in my best `Aircraft Crash Investigation` recreation, this next picture shows in better detail how much of the tail was actually lost. (providing I got my measurements mostly right?) ![]() |

Not too much to report on this one with the cockpit and Pilot done and main fuselage all buttoned up with the broken tail fin. ![]() In the fore ground is the lovely bit of hard foil I`ll be using to mimic torn aluminum. |
