This will be my first GB on MMM and I'm anxious to begin. Eduard are one of my favorite companies. This kit includes PS, PE, resin, and two sets of decals for making one of four jets. I am still undecided as to which markings I will select. But I have narrowed it down to either the No. 111 Squadron 1962, or the No. 56 Squadron 1963, Firebirds Aerobatics team. This should prove to be a challenging build for me. One of my weak areas in modelling is creating a seamless join without losing surface detail. This kit will also afford the opportunity to create a natural metal finish on most of the fuselage. Time to get started!

You might find you get the best joint attaching the leading edge inserts to the lower wing sections before top and bottom wings are bought together.

Cheers for that Simon.

The basic shape is now in place. I was surprised at the join of the wings and fuselage. Topside the fit was good, but underneath, there is a significant gap. Also, a very noticeable gap between the fuselage and tail. I will be adding some sheet styrene to fill the gaps. Prior to priming, the wing wheel wells will receive their final PE parts. I appreciate the detail Airfix provided for various attachments to the fuselage.

I will be trying a new approach with the metallic finish. Normally, I would prime, apply Alclad Gloss Black Base, and the metallic finish. Instead, I have first applied Tamiya Panel Line Accent. Next will be a light coat of primer followed by Alclad Aqua Gloss Clear. Then the metallic finish awaits.

The basic paint scheme is in place. Now come the decals and a clear coat. After that I will add some variation to a few panels.

As for the painting method used; You be the judge.

It is not often that I put together a kit with a metallic finish. So I checked some sources regarding Alclad, decals, and clear coats. The consensus is that setting and softening solutions are not recommended for the high shine finishes. Also, clear coats were not endorsed.(I researched the Alclad home site and a number of modelling web sites)

The decals have gone on quite well using only water. It is however, taking more time than I had expected. This is because the drawings do not match the kit for representing the panels and panel lines. It is taking me much longer to correctly place each decal. Nonetheless, the Cartograf decals are excellent to work with. The walkway stripes and roundel were not properly located on my first attempt. After re-wetting the decals they were easily re-positioned.
The first stage is finished, so now to allow for some drying time. Next will be the starboard side and then the underbelly.

A tad too shiny for me but I like the metallic effect and you have achieved my hearts desire, a metallic that looks real. Something I cannot achieve with the hairy stick.

Cheers everyone.
As the month is coming to a close, it's time to get moving and finish this up. Decals are complete as well as some shading to a few of the panels. Next up are the landing gear and weapons. I will be adding Firestreak missiles.
