No real need to go over the Airfix Lightning in 1:48 - just about everything which need to be said about it has already been done so many times over elsewhere. Using the CMK resincast conversion to produce the Saudi Trainer variant and the decals needed can be adapted from the MA sheet shown here. All decal sheets included are shown for completeness, but naturally most of it won't be used. If there's something there you need and I won't be using, let me know and you'll be welcome to them. (Other than the Saudi markings and stencils, there's nothing else here I will ever use).

Tailpipes & afterburners secured in place and the nose removed for the conversion. Conversion nose parts are a little warped and it's not straightforward to join them to the fuselage. That being the case I'll have to cut out the vacform Canopy early to make certain it matches the proper width of the completed nose assembly - at present that's not necessarily a given.

I think we get used to the idea that resincast conversions are pretty good. Not so here. Due to the warping on the thin fwd fuselage halves, the fit isn't great and a deal of milliput is needed to properly fair the replacement parts in. I'd rather have seen a single piece casting which would have been far less problematical.

Sanding, sanding, sanding....

You've done a great job on the crew and weapons. Best of luck with the rest.

Just some small cleanup areas to do, and a couple of lumps and bumps to add, then painting can commence.

Ready to start adding the decals now.

Undercoated the NM with gloss black and added two layers of Humbrol Metalcote polished aluminium via aerosol. Let that bake under the recent sunshine for four days and then polished the paint. It helps the polish if you add a tiny amount of a polishing compound to the polishing cloth. I used Tamiya polishing compound but toothpaste or Brasso might be useable. As with all things, practice elsewhere before trying it on a finished model. But it does seem to bring the Metalcote polish out successfully.

I paintbrushed over that with a pre-prepared mix of Tamiya gloss varnish with a small amount of transparent blue and their transparent 'Smoke' added. To that I add roughly 25% of the Sealer you see in the bottom pic. When drying it effectively turns the varnish into a skin which shrinks over the model and gives a very smooth finish. That sealer can also be used with acrylics generally and alleviates some problems which can be encountered when brushing with them.

Decals finished apart from a very small number of stencils which need to be added to parts which aren't yet on the model itself. Should be finished this one in a few days time.
