Mid-way through the 21st century, humanity began developing new technologies, that would benefit the world and themselves. However, global warming was now progressing too fast to be stopped. Alternate fuels were being made, but not produced fast enough to slow it down. In the 2050s, Mars was divided into territories given to the nations of America, Russia, Japan, China, the EU member states, and then a single UN territory, Free Mars.

The United States annexed Canada in 2089, for the oil, after a failed attempt to power the nation with nuclear plants. Peak oil hit in Saudi Arabia, causing the Great Oil Depression of 2090, and the Resource Wars were sparked. Saudi Arabia petitioned with former OPEC nations to form the Unified Islamic Caliphate, which would unify all Muslim nations willing to join for protection.

Droughts began hitting the Amazon, and forest fires struck soon after. The United States went to war with Mexico, as production of lithium skyrocketed in the rest of the world. China made puppet states out of the Koreas, and began to invade southeast Asia to gain more territory and resources, as its population dropped back to below 1 billion.

The Troubles began around 2100, when massive global flooding began, India splitting nearly in half, the UK becoming merged with the EU (which formed a solid union throughout all the European nations) when it was almost completely submerged. The EU spread into north Africa's republics, stemmed from the 2011 protests, and absorbed them. (French Guinea was still part of France)

During the Troubles, territories were lost and gained, and chaos and riots became wide-spread. Africa, unlike most places, benefited from this - unifying under a strong leader, the majority of Africa became a strong union of nations, that functioned as one but were still sovereign. This is generally credited to the first leader of the African Union, Mohammed Gabali, a Islamic immigrant to South Africa.

The Lithium Producing Nations, or LPN, formed in South America as the Middle East lost prominence in global economics. It was in 2112, when Michigo Yanaihara, a Japanese-American citizen, developed the Yanaihara Drive, which could propel ships to speeds close to the speed of light, safely. The planet Mars by this time was a bustling colony world, but with the Yanaihara Drive, America could send men and women to the stars.

And it did.

The Resource Wars waged on Earth as the United States ventured to the Alpha Centauri system, decades before the rest of the world developed their own drives. By 2200, there were 20 billion humans - and only 5 billion of them were on Earth, which was becoming more and more chaotic. The spacefaring powers waged wars for elements such as Rhenium, Lithium, Platinum, Uranium, and other elements used by the space ships.

The Latin American League formed to protect the Central American nations and the northern South America nations around 2201, when American aggression picked up again, trying to expand south. Australia formed the Oceanic Republic in 2210, and Russia reconquered the Caucuses and the -Stans, for oil (which was still a major fuel resource).

2300 rolled around. 31 billion humans, spread out over a sphere that stretched nearly 30 lightyears in diameter, Earth in the center. 3 billion humans lived on Earth, another 24 billion on Earth-like planets, and the remaining 4 billion on dangerous worlds and space stations orbiting stars.

2325, the Earth is hanging on the balance. Droughts, starvation, massive storms, hurricanes, floods... the Earth has become a new Hell, and yet mankind is clawing into its Motherplanet for safety.
