![]() ![]() Dorsal and Ventral views ![]() Aft Profile ![]() Sublight Engines Active Information: The Nerpa-class Battlecruiser is not what the class type would imply; unlike the Systems Alliance’s former Battlecruisers, the Nerpa is built more like a Battlecarrier. It’s main purpose to launch fighters and bombers but at the same time carry enough bite to fight as well. The Nerpa was designed to be the command vessel of individual fleets, the head of a task force, or even the center of a Carrier Air Group. The design is far more modern as well, replacing the dated Cassus Kett and Ravanor Xarak which was designed back in 1939. As technology improved, so did the the designs of Thysera. The Lira Pocket Cruisers were the first step in the new direction into vessels with less vulnerabilities than the designs from the late 1800s-early 1900s. The Nerpa was to be the first of a new series of larger capital ships which would make up the modern “Gray Navy.” The older vessels would receive refits and be placed on colonial patrol duty or be assigned to the CSS according to the plan. Meanwhile the Nerpa and new vessel classes would be moved out to the front for immediate service. This plan did not proceed as anticipated, as the older vessels continued serving into 2615, but the Nerpa and other classes by far replaced them in service. The design of the Nerpa, along with the other larger classes of vessels, include the “Flight Pod” feature which allows two dedicated launch/recovery platforms for fighters, gunships, and bombers. The flight pods of the Battlecruiser need to retract before a jump, or severe damage along the vessel’s lateral frame could result, potentially tearing it in half. The flight pods are used for landing of fighters, gunships, and shuttles. They may be utilized for launches if needed, but the Nerpa and subsequent vessels utilize launch tubes for launching fighters. Note, volume is very low. From Battlestar Galactica The weaponry of the class also reflects an advancement in Thyserian naval warfare by integrating Krogan made weaponry from Empire General Assembly. One major change was the introduction of four 75m fixed MAC cannons in the chin of the vessel. While not as powerful as cruisers in her time, perfected MAC technology over the ages has bridged the gap, allowing the Nerpa to pack firepower equivalent to cruisers in the days of her design. The 50m Bloodrage Autocannons also give the Nerpa a formidable bite. The Nerpa also carries a blistering number of CIWS-Flak guns and GARDIAN clusters, making approach with fighters or missile attacks more of a crapshoot. The icing on the cake are a dozen dorsal missile tubes large enough to fire the Hailstorm missile from EGA. These tubes are also capable of launching nuclear weapons if needed. The tubes can be loaded and unloaded as needed via an autoloader in the missile bay. The class is rather large in design for a cruiser, dwarfing practically all other vessels in her day, showing the ambition of the Thyserian people and their Krogan overlords. The performance of the Nerpa along with improvements designed by Svyok will play into the construction of the future Revolution, Thysera and Victoria class vessels. The class proved itself during the Krogan Civil War as a combat vessel and new Thyserian doctrines in a trial by fire. These venerable ships are still serving in 2615 with upgrades to their systems over the ages. The hull of the ERC Nerpa was originally laid down in 2201 pending completion in 2203. However, the hull of the incomplete vessel was left behind to save the orbiting shipyard modules during the Reaper War. The hull was destroyed over Thysera and the completed portions fell on an uninhabited area of the planet after some partial disintegration in the atmosphere. The new hull was laid down in 2203 and completed in 2206. The Nerpa also held distinction in the galaxy for being the first design to break the glass ceiling of ship length. At a whopping 1438.64m long, she dwarfed all dreadnoughts and carriers in service in Council space. The Krogan parents of their new suffragan state were more than happy to assist and learn more of ship design from the ambitious Thyserians at Svyok Design Bureau. The Nerpa's classification as a Battlecruiser was legally challenged by the Asari Republics and bought to courts in the Citadel to reclassify the ship as a dreadnought and force her destruction as a Farixen violation. However, the Citadel courts found that the classification could remain. With the Nerpa lacking any true spinal gun like a dreadnought, it did not violate the Treaty of Farixen, noting that it had more in common with Carriers than Dreadnoughts. This allowed for Thyserians to continue to push the envelope in the future. The Krogan Empire, also in need of vessels in the earlier days of naval building, procured the Nerpa-class for the Imperial Navy. Krogan designed vessels contain a "roomier" interior for Krogans with launch tubes modified slightly to be able to fit their fighters, yet still be able to launch Erineos' fighters should any of their pilots be aboard. While no new orders have been placed for the Imperial Navy, these venerable vessels remain in service, the design having proved itself during the Krogan Civil War in Thyserian service. Naming Conventions: Nerpa-class starships are classified by Hull Numbers while under construction. They are officially named by their first Captain, aside from the lead ship, so the gambit of names will vary. The Nerpa has the sole distinction of being the only vessel of this class to have operated under both the Erineos Republic's old ERC prefix and the current scheme. All battlecruisers after her have received the KIN prefix once commissioned into service. Those exported to the Krogan Empire have NBK hull numbers. Hull Number/Ship List
