YA-400 "Scimitar" Fighter![]() Battlestar Galactica Viper Mk II Name: Scimitar-class Space Superiority Fighter Designation: YA-400 Manufacturer: Yakaiev Design Bureau, Various licensed constructors Operators:
Year Built: Prototype: 2000, Production 2005-2056 Mk I, 2056-2075 Mk II 2285-2310 (Pax Vitus license Mk I and II) Unit Cost: 15 Million Syshule (2005) Classification: Planetary/Star fighter ![]() YA-400 Mk II "Super Scimitar" (larger than original YA-400, cost at 17.5m Syshule) Description: An iconic fighter of the Traverse, the Scimitar served as the basis for the future fighter designs of the Erineos Republic and the later Queendom. The design has been prolific with Terminus governments attempting to mete out a lawful existence in the Terminus, making it the most exported fighter in Thyserian production history. The Scimitar, despite being obsolete in terms of firepower and even unlinked avionics, is still an effective combat aircraft. The design of the Scimitar was even enlarged, allowing for the addition of bomb bays and wing hardpoints, creating the Super Scimitar multirole fighter. The Scimitar also served alongside its replacements, the YA-443 Zero and YA-500 Saber. The YA-400s were phased out of service following the Krogan Civil War and in current times are relegated to secondary line use. The Mk I has been phased out of the Thyserian Navy entirely while the Mk II remains in use training pilots in strike missions, due to its payload capacity. The CSS uses the Mk I to train pilots and keep them qualified for flight status while the Super Scimitar remains in service as the Committee's interdiction craft. However, in the Terminus itself, the Scimitar is still a popular defense fighter due to its cheaper costs for small, legal governments that have purchased them in the past. Many of these governments have purchased a production license for these fighters but others have purchased them directly from Yakaiev Design Bureau if they lacked the production facilities. These fighters can still be seen defending various governments in the Terminus and may even one day come up in combat against their replacements if the Krogan Empire should ever choose to pacify the region. Armament: 2 Mass Accelerated Cannons (Mk 1 and MK II) Internal Weapon Bays for 2 1000lb bombs, 6 medium range BVR missiles, 4 long range BVR missiles, or 12 infrared anti-air missiles (Mk II) Wing hardpoints for 4 infrared AAM (Mk I) Wing hardpoints for 8 infrared AAM or 4 500lb bombs. (Mk II) Advantages: Simple and cheap to construct Highly maneuverable Older systems are immune to current EW attacks Small wings on the Mk I make it ill suited for atmospheric engagements Disadvantages: Designed for the Terminus Cramped cockpit Avionics Layout is primarily forward facing Center stick for those who prefer the side stick ![]() Cockpit Avionics Viper Mk II and IIB comparison by Pierre Drolet Edited by Wheeljack, Jul 2 2017, 08:04 PM.
