A'tai-Varyevic Model 2104 Stealth Fighter

Posted Image
Stealthstar from Battlestar Galactica

Name: A'tai-Varyevic Model 2104 Stealth Reconnaissance Fighter

Designation: Ardat

Manufacturer/Designer: A'tai-Varyevic Design Bureau
Laiana Varyevic (Designer of the earlier Varyevic 1993 Yakshi Stealth Recon Fighter)

Operator: Erineos Republic

Availability: Currently Exclusive, contracts may be considered

Year Built:
1993-Maiden Flight of the Yakshi Stealth Fighter by Varyevic
2078-The combined A'tai-Varyevic Bureau revisits the concept of the Yakshi. Designing takes place and a prototype is built by the end of 2097
2098-The updated fighter takes flight and performs to the designer's standards. The fighter is outfitted with weapon systems to pitch to the government. The contract isn't issued until 2104, thus earning its model name

Classification: Reconnaissance Fighter
Stealth Fighter

Features: Radar Absorbing Material Hull
Standard Thyserian Avionics
Small FTL Drive
Variable Wings

Production Cost: 450 Million Syshule (2202)

Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP): 950 Million (for contract sales)

Materials: Radar Absorbing Material, 3 Sublight Engines

Armament:
Single barrel MAC mounted in the nose under moving doors
Internal Weapons Bay containing up to 8 conventional missiles or a single small yield nuclear warhead

Advantages:
Protection from short-wave radar
Black paint job gives it less of a visual recognition in space
Small size retains less heat, making thermal detection highly improbable once engines are cut off
It’s a fighter, so it’s hard to hit while on the move
More maneuverable and durable than its predecessor

Disadvantages:
Lack of Armament: its primary role is recon but is capable of hit and run attacks and acting defensively
Far more costly than its predecessor
Few in number, only elite squadrons and some preferential pilots are allowed to fly the craft
Stealth profile is lost from top and bottom when variable wings are expanded

Refits:
2147-Upgraded to a slightly more powerful MAC over the original design
2190-New electronics and avionics
2205-Replace the single barrel MAC of some fighters with a rotary cannon in order to give greater dogfight capabilities
Various technological upgrades to 2610

Description:
The success of the earlier Yakshi stealth craft by the A’tai-Varyevic Design Bureau gave the Erineos Republic an edge on keeping an eye on various pirate outposts within the Terminus Systems that may pose a threat to the colony. However, the AtV-1993 design was highly outdated and based off the chassis of the Yakaiev F381 of the same era. The need for an update came about a century after the first flight of the Yakshi.

Designed by the same design bureau, the Ardat bought about an advance in the recon doctrine of the Erineos Republic. Unlike the Yakshi and its payload of 1 missile, the Ardat was capable of dealing more damage before retreating. The elimination of greater key targets was of huge importance for any preemptive strike or precision strike mission. Though not required for a redesign, the internal weapon bay was configured to launch a nuclear warhead in place of the conventional missiles. While it’s not an option the Thyserians wish to use, the capability remains.

The Ardat's materials and space-bound profile give it superior protection for its age. The craft is protected from short-wave radar systems and its paint scheme prevents visual detection against the darkness of space. Armor plating on the Ardat was also a step up from the carbon fiber of the Yakshi. The small size of fighters also prove an advantage against thermal detection systems once engines are cut off, as heat is not easily maintained like capital ships. A typical recon mission in space from a recon pilot is to set up the approach using engines, cut them off, and allow inertia to drift through space. Once the mission is accomplished the engines are put back on and the craft heads for home.

The Ardat also has an advantage over its predecessor in a range of attack operations. The earlier Yakshi could only operate in space and suffered from atrocious handling in the atmosphere, so much to the point that the pilot wasn’t able to accurately strike at any surface targets. The Ardat on the other hand is capable of atmospheric flight with its variable wings. Upon entering high atmosphere, where there is far less wind resistance, the wings expand, giving the craft a forward-swept profile and generate lift to reduce fuel consumption. The downside is the stealth profile is lost from the top and bottom, but allows for strikes against atmospheric targets that could only before be done by conventional craft.

The 2104 showed its usefulness during the Krogan Civil War, being able to spy on Independent positions, stealthily engage fighters, and also carry out strike missions deep in Independent territory. These fighters were invaluable to the cause and even caused the deaths of several Soradok commanders. While not mass produced like the Zero and Saber, the Ardat's production continues to this day, showing the design is not one bit obsolete.

The Ardat serves within the Thyserian Royal Navy, Committee for State Security, and even with Thyserian pilots attached to the Krogan Imperial Navy. Four models are retained by A'tai-Varyevic for demonstrations, testing, and for exploring new upgrades.
