Production Cost: 750,000,000 Galactic Standard Credits (2186)

Materials: Radar Absorbing Material

Armament:
2 Internal Bays for 50,000lbs of ordinance and payload:

[Single mission loads for maximum capacity are listed, all ordinance cannot be combined. ie: you can't have your 80 500lb bombs AND 16 2000lb bombs however you can have the 16 2000lb bombs AND 32 Air to Air Missiles]
80x 500lb Bombs (Guided or Unguided) on Bomb Rack Assembly
36x 750lb Bombs (Guided or Unguided) on BRA

16x 2000lb Bombs (Guided or Unguided) on Rotary Launcher Assembly
16x 1.2 Megaton Guided Nuclear Bombs on RLA [If required, replaces 2000lb bombs]
64x Air to Ground Missiles (Standard missiles, Bomblet Missiles, Bunker Defeat Munitions) [If 0 air to air missiles carried, replaces 2000lb bombs]
32x Air to Air Missiles for Self Preservation on RLA [Max capacity is 64 if all bombs removed and bomber is used as missile platform]

Countermeasures:
Flares
Chaff

Advantages:
Has enough ordinance to level acres of land
Stealth technology gives the bomber lesser detection from radar
Ability to carry air to air missiles for self preservation
Variable loadouts, including nuclear strike capability
Flying wing provides low profile design

Disadvantages:
Large exhausts, catastrophic failure of flight capabilities if a wing is shot off
Requires advanced stabilization software due to flying wing design
Upper engines are rather vulnerable
Large target
Not very maneuverable, considering bombers are large
Low Top Speed, reliant on friendly aircraft to escort
Visible on thermal scopes despite RAM technology

Description:

Named for a fierce arctic hunter species native to Thysera, the Varigyr, this bomber is a development towards heavy attack doctrines on planets. Stealth technology was preferred for the bomber thanks to the earlier Yakshi and more recent Ardat Stealth Fighters. A Stealth Bomber continues to cooperate with the Asari tactics of hit and run attacks while a bomber of this scope gave the Erineos Republic's Navy the ability to obliterate ground targets in carpet bombing or precision strikes with missiles.

The Varigyr addresses a crucial point in Thyserian warfare while still allowing adherence to the Citadel's laws of war. The Varigyr's function is to be deployed from fleets in orbit, descend to the planet for it's bombing run, attack, and then return to the fleet above. The Varigyr can handle speeds to enter atmosphere and even attain escape velocity with the assistance of both sets of engines. However, for the attack missions only the outer engines are active. While the increase of speed may be useful to escape enemy aircraft, the bomber typically flies with an escort of stealth fighters.

The Varigyr has an adaptable payload able to carry bombs and missiles, depending on equipment installed prior to the mission. While a multirole fighter is far more advantageous in combat, it lacks the destructive capability of a dedicated bomber. A unique feature that the Varigyr carries is the potential for air to air missiles. These missiles give the Varigyr a level of self preservation against fighters but is ill advised as a replacement for fighter escorts. The Varigyr, if required, can also deliver a devastating nuclear payload; bombs 75 times more powerful than the bomb the humans dropped on Hiroshima at 1.2 Megatons. During the Krogan Civil War, the Varigyrs carried 11000lb (5000kg) Fuel-Air Bombs that were dropped on Thax Stronghold; while not originally designed to carry these bombs, it was a possible feat with the Varigyr.

Typical of all bombers, especially flying wings, the Varigyr sacrifices maneuverability for payload and its slimmer profile. The stealth technology of the Varigyr blinds its presence to radar; however the bomber itself is still visible by visual acquisition and on thermal scopes, due to the presence of radar absorbing materials in the hull. While a vast improvement over conventional bombers, the stealth technology is not foolproof. It's only defense against missiles is in the form of flares and chaff as countermeasures.

Due to the prohibitive costs of the Varigyr, only 30 units were ordered in 2203, not attaining full operational status until 2244. The fleet was quickly expanded to 75 models by 2310 before the outbreak of the Krogan Civil War. These bombers saw combat during the Krogan Civil War where they proved themselves the bane of the Independents. Survivors from Clan Ashkrik, Taksor, and Karnik (formerly members of the Soradok) have told horror stories about the destructive power of the Varigyr, giving the bomber a reputation in Council space as a deadly machine of war.
