Taking place after the Second Krogan Rebellion, the Krogan Civil War could be considered a unification war of the Krogan Empire. Open hostilities did not arrive until after the terraformation of Tuchanka, the krogan homeworld. The damage and devastation that ruined the planet’s ecosystem millennia prior during the First Krogan Rebellion has been reversed through Imperial intervention and investment efforts to advance civilization, create a higher standard of living, and restore their cradle of life to its former glory at the benefit of the Imperial citizens. This wealth, prosperity, and success favored only Imperial territory. Independent factions that opposed Emperor Krogan Blite’s rule were not permitted to benefit from the rewards. They were forced to watch from their borders as their Imperial neighbors’ numbers grew exponentially, their crops yielding food in abundance, and clean, purified water for irrigation and drinking. Resources bountiful, commercialization of Imperial territory soon followed. Enterprise braved the new frontier and opportunity created on Tuchanka. Terraformation of the entire planet had granted the Independent clans the opportunity to cultivate fertile lands, but lacked the infrastructure to support such projects on a large scale. Most clans were only able to cultivate enough food for self-sustainment. Being denied the Genophage cure and now the means in which they were to advance, grow, and propagate further, many Independent chieftains saw their disadvantage and refused to accept their self-imposed plight. The false Empire’s continuance unopposed had went on long enough. The Independents’ envy of the Krogan Empire manifested in the schemings of Chief Soradok Ganar, an ultra-conservative, traditionalist Chieftain who was extremely spiteful of the new ways in the Empire, seeking to level the playing field. Using contacts in the Blood Pack, he acquired the Genophage Cure through theft in 2310 and rallied the Independent Chieftains to his cause, making him the figurehead and leader of the Second Krogan Rebellion. Using the Second Krogan Rebellion as a rallying call for other Independent clans to support his cause, Chieftain Soradok Ganar sought to “exact revenge” against the Rachni for daring to grace the galaxy with their presence once again. This act of aggression served to prove Ganar’s strength as a leader, as well as competence in command of military forces on a scale beyond skirmishes. Ganar considered the other chiefs who stood true to the old ways as brothers, but they ceded much military decisionmaking authority to the Soradok Clan during the assaults on Rachni worlds. This unprovoked aggression against the Rachni Harmonic prompted the Empire and its ambassadors to appeal to the Citadel Council for assistance in neutralizing the Independent threat it had warned about for years prior. Ever since the unauthorized delivery of the Genophage cure into the hands of Independent clans whom did not abide by the Empire’s strict breeding quotas, Ambassador Kolten warned of future conflict arising as their traditionalist cousins were not so reserved and hesitant in their actions. Many harbored a grudge generations deep and sought to enact revenge for the sake of lost glory and establishing their dominance. The Council, wary of repeating history or risking a full-scale galactic conflict that would prove costly in life and military investment from all parties involved, denied motions to intervene and involve themselves into what they considered a “krogan-centric affair”. The resulting delay due to bureaucracy and red tape tying up the Empire from taking appropriate action against their rebellious cousins was catastrophic. In a few short years, the Independent clans beneath Chieftain Soradok Ganar committed genocide against the Rachni Harmonic. Billions slaughtered down to the last brood warrior, worker, and larva until only the Queen remained. She too was struck down and eradicated. The galaxy left empty of Rachni once again as the species was declared extinct once more. Their worlds now belonged to the Independent clans, their lust for conquest yet to be satiated. Their sights turned on their most staunch opposition: The Krogan Empire. Independent clans begin to conduct organized raids and harassment of Imperial territory. Small-scale skirmishes between warriors and the defending Imperial Internal Affairs and garrisoned forces were not uncommon at borders shared with Independent states. Imperial military officials often requested of the Imperial Warmaster and the Emperor for permission to go on the offensive against the offending transgressors to put a permanent cease and desist on their actions. Each time they were denied due to the political climate of the galaxy and ordered to remain in defensive posture, much to Imperial Warmaster Ravanor Xarak’s dismay as even his patience was wearing thin with the Emperor’s stance regarding galactic policy. Seeking to acquire resources long denied (food stores, weapons, munitions, etc…), their attacks grow more and more emboldened with each success. All the while, the Emperor convinces his supporting Chieftains to be patient while their Citadel counterparts negotiate with the Council before taking action. The last thing the Empire desired was to sour relations with the galactic community after spending centuries building repertoire and respect with their neighbors. In addition to attacks on Tuchanka against Imperial Clans, Imperial supply vessels were being raided by the Soradok Armada and hired privateers in several systems. Independents of all clans also became emboldened by building forts on Imperial Territory, daring the “alien boot-lickers” to come and take them by force. The piracy and further encroachments did nothing but cause further increasing tensions and prompted many Imperial-aligned Chieftains to reconsider their prospects and taking action themselves, without the Emperor’s authorization. With a taste for blood from the overwhelming and absolute victory over the Rachni, the Independents, still under Ganar’s leadership, now fully turn their attention to their “inferior, alien boot-licking cousins” as Warmaster Soradok Lahkol blockaded Tuchanka. The blockade disrupted commerce and a steady supply of much-needed provisions and resources to Imperial-aligned territories. This was an action the Empire could no longer ignore and prompted a response. The fact that the Independents were able to arm themselves to such a great extent only increased the need to act quickly, lest Tuchanka be ruined once again by short-sighted, selfish stupidity. At the risk of creating a schism in the Empire as lands bordering Independent territory were under constant threat and harassment from Ganar’s allied forces demanding action and the “safer” territories calling for diplomacy, Emperor Krogan Blite sits with his cabinet of Overlord Chieftains to develop a strategy to counter the Independent threat. Imperial Warmaster Ravanor Xarak, Imperial Navalmaster Urdnot Drakaar, and other military officials make it abundantly clear with supporting military intelligence that action MUST be taken before they risk a conflict on a scale unimaginable with Independent clans populating at an alarming rate and having access to supplies and armaments on a comparable scale to that of the Empire’s own manufacturing capabilities. Eventually, the Overlords are in agreement and the Emperor can no longer deny the facts and evidence presented. While respecting his authority and strength, the Overlord Chieftains of Emperor Krogan Blite’s cabinet unanimously demand an official declaration of war against their independent-aligned cousins for their repeated offenses and aggression against their people. Realizing that the use of words and diplomacy was not going to sway the parties involved, Emperor Blite has no choice but to proceed forward with what his people are demanding. Lacking Council support, he notifies the Imperial Ambassador to inform the Council and make it abundantly clear that with this being a “krogan-centric affair”, as they politicized for so long, that they are to stay out of the matter entirely. No support, no intervention, and no profiteering for either faction involved. Even as the Empire’s lukewarm ally, they do not want their pity or influence to handle “their own” issues. Not entirely happy about being told what to do by a non-Council member, none of them seek to disagree with the Emperor for they have their own centric issues to contend with. Open hostilities are declared by the Krogan Empire against Chieftain Soradok Ganar and any who support his cause on 02/10/2313 by Imperial Edict…. Whereas the Independent Clans have committed repeated acts of war against the Government, Clans, and people of the Krogan Empire; Therefore be it Resolved by Emperor Krogan Blite, that the state of war between the Krogan Empire and the Independent Coalition under Soradok Ganar which has been thrust upon the Krogan Empire is hereby formally declared; and that Imperial Warmaster Ravanor Xarak and Imperial Navalmaster Urdnot Drakaar are hereby authorized to employ the entire naval and military forces of the Krogan Empire and resources of the Empire to carry on war against the Independent Coalition; and to bring the conflict to a successful termination all resources and necessary authority for war is granted by Emperor Blite. The Krogan Civil War had official begun. A day many feared...and others thirsted for. The Empire rejoices, eager and ready to face their staunch opposition. A conflict many predicted would come as it was only a matter of time. An opportunity for a new generation of Imperial citizens to grasp honor and glory in battle as their ancestors did against the Greatest Enemy (Reapers) centuries prior. Rather than dread and uneasiness, many in Imperial territory celebrated in preparation for war. Soldiers and warriors alike were adored, festivities of song, dance, and drink were had by all, culminating into a grand military parade of the main thoroughfare through Port Woozin from the port at the harbor before ending on the Parade Grounds of the Imperial Palace. In the years following the conclusion of the Krogan Civil War, the Imperial people look upon this day with great reverence as it was the start of a new era. Annually, the celebration and recognizing of the Imperial Military’s servicemen and women is held, known as Armament Day. Brave men whose hearts combined beat to the drums of war beneath the Emperor’s banner. Mobilization soon began of existing assets as Empire General Assembly found itself tasked beyond capacity with contracts and orders in preparation for the war to come. Imperial Weaponmaster Kolvant Garoth was forced to raid the EGA arsenal’s storage unit and break out the Model 1 HAWS and older Krogan weaponry to fill the Empire’s needs for the short term...some Imperial Troopers were going into battle with weapons older than they were. Independents, likewise were reveled in having an open declaration of conflict with the Empire. With ambiguity being thrown aside in true Krogan fashion for direct action, the Independents geared up and marched to war. No celebration, no festivities, only a thirst for blood that could be sated through mortal combat, the Independents were far more keen to taste the blood of their inferior cousins than to drink ryncol and have a festival before blood was spilled. The fleet from Chieftain Soradok Ganar’s Armada maintained a blockade of Tuchanka, seeking to “starve” Imperial territories into submission with the two powers being at war. The Krogan Empire responds with a large, mixed fleet: 1st Imperial Fleet of the Krogan Imperial Navy and vessels from the 1st and 2nd Fleets of the Thyserian Royal Navy arrive at Tuchanka a few short days later after much preparation and the first major engagement of the Krogan Civil War begins...the first shots of the war fired by a stealth cruiser, the KIN Wrath of Virmire. Ganar would come to be the primary opponent of Blite and Xarak during the conflict. Aided by his right hand commander, Clan Warmaster Soradok Thrax, a former mercenary and well versed in the art of war. The two put up perhaps the greatest resistance to the Empire ever faced since the Reaper War. Along with Thrax was his favored naval commander Warmaster Soradok Hrogar, a former pirate who made a living in the Terminus before returning at Ganar’s request to lend his expertise to the Soradok Armada. Clan Soradok was quietly supported by Asari Republics-connected businesses, as revealed by several members of the clan who defected to the Empire. They brought transaction records with them that showed income flowing from corporations on Illium with known ties to the Asari Republics. They also voiced suspicions about the Commandos sent to the planet to assist with training, with nearly half participating in battles, thinking the presence of a mere 2000 Eclipse on the planet compared to tens of thousands of Blood Pack and Black Suns was extremely suspicious. However, the Krogan Empire had no proof with the Commandos as Republic's troops, but proceeded with the transaction evidence after the war, revealing it to the Council. The Asari Republics were forced into publically denouncing these companies and forced a seizure of their assets on Illium and the arrest of several board members of these businesses. While no direct link could be found with evidence from the Soradok defectors, it left a sour taste in the mouths of many Krogan and Thyserians. Asari Republics related meta data In addition to the Black Suns and Blood Pack, the Independents also solicited support from individual mercenaries and small time PMCs. There was also a documented presence of 2,000 Asari from the Eclipse, though if they were truly members of Eclipse is still disputed by some historians to this day. Statistically, the numbers were stacked against the Empire and their vassals, but that was the only advantage the Independents held. Imperial military officials went into the war underestimating the strength of the Independent coalition that formed under Soradok Ganar. Expecting under-equipped and untrained pushovers, they were extremely surprised in the first years of the war to find their adversaries were able to field a massive army upwards of 13 million levied warriors per clan, in addition to well trained, well equipped veterans in sizeable numbers. While not as skilled as their veterans, the legions of levies proved to overwhelm even the highly trained Imperial Troopers in the early battles of the war. Aggressive tactics similar to the Empire’s own planetary invasion battle plans of terrestrial worlds with overwhelming numbers en masse negated many technological advantages the Imperial military had at the risk of danger-close friendly fire incidents. This prevented much-needed fire support from softening up Independent positions as their forces would rapidly encroach upon Imperial infantry and often force close-quarters and even melee range. The Imperial Navy faced staunch opposition as well, unable to fathom that the Independent clans could muster a sizable fighting force, let alone know how to conduct it and understand naval combat doctrines. The same overconfidence and lack of preparation on the Empire’s behalf led to a larger-than-acceptable percentage of casualties in combat in the opening years of the war. Wrill, the home of clan Woade and Emperor Krogan Blite, was targeted by the independents in the opening years, with Clan Soradok capturing the Drau Alaric at a high cost to the Empire and nearly causing the total destruction of the Imperial Navy’s Third Fleet at the hands of Warmaster Soradok Hrogar. The early victories of the Independents on Tuchanka and the Invasion of Wrill forced the Empire to mobilize everything: non-Trooper warriors, the entire reserves of the Thyserian Army, and even drag Imperial Navalmaster and Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Navy Mirah Zhenya out of retirement, making the only time in the history of both governments when there were two active members holding the highest rank of their respective navies; Imperial Navalmaster Gatatog Kuag of the Imperial Navy and Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal Navy Tatch Zhenya of the Thyserian Royal Navy were both made subordinate to the more experienced Mirah. Kuag, a vainglorious leader attempted to make a name for himself, which led to Mirah’s recall from retirement. He attempted to invade Soradok Territory with a large invasion force without recon flights for updated intelligence, going off old intelligence reports of Soradok’s air defenses instead. The botched, over-extended invasion of Soradok Territory, as well as Kuag’s bungling which led to the temporary loss of the Drau Alaric and the Warlord Okeer having to be repaired at Virmire set the Imperial Navy back several years in capability with grievous losses. The losses over Soradok Territory and at the Naval Battle of Aralakh System left gaps in coverage of Imperial territory, which left them open to piracy by the Soradok and Arzin’s Delight, Hrogar’s two pirate vessels and the last survivors of the Soradok Armada. As Kuag was demoted and reassigned by a military tribunal, the Thyserians chased down and destroyed the cruiser and frigate, putting an end to the machinations of an Independent navy. Now attention could be focused planetside at Tuchanka. The conflict, pragmatic as its participants were by nature, was largely conventional in most modern military doctrines. While skirmishes were commonplace with deviating nuances in established fronts for either faction, by and large, lines between forces were strongly defined. The tactics of the combined participants (surging numbers en masse from Independent clans and overwhelming suppressive fire of targets from Imperial forces) resulted in staggeringly high casualties from each major engagement. Both Imperial and Independent forces held heavily-fortified positions with many emplaced weapons to ward off transgressors. Factoring in the krogan mentality towards conflict (the straight-forward approach), it is unsurprising that many major engagements were rendered into bloodied fields of massacres. Appalling and horrific from the outside perspective, combat between krogan of this magnitude has never been seen before in the galaxy. Skirmishes between warriors of warring clans are not uncommon on Tuchanka, but to see hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of casualties from a single engagement was surreal for most historians documenting the carnage. Many could only make a comparison to the razed cities and countless lives lost against the Reapers centuries prior. Aside from the Independent Coalition, there also existed various Independent clans who were neither sworn to the Empire nor to the Coalition. Several small clans declared loyalty to the Empire from the outset, under threat their clan would be destroyed and lands razed. Others declared for the Empire up to 2320 when they were freed of influence from one of the large coalition clans. If “neutral” clans were encountered by either faction, conscription efforts were mandated upon them and their territory. Those that resisted often found themselves to be considered the enemy and were quickly subjugated for their rebellion. The Independent Coalition did so out of desperation to raise forces to stand against the Imperial Tide while the Empire continued its justified war of unification. Those that sought to resist the order it represented were quickly brought beneath its banner with extreme prejudice through occupation, martial law, and enforcement of Imperial decrees. |
