Well, I've decided to see what it would be like to write a running story to see if I can keep peoples interest. Feel free to post comments here or form a differnet thread for commenting, the latter may be smartest. Anyway, I will be writing a story that has a similar baseline to Midori itself. This one has the working title HERETIC. I'm not sure where it will lead, what it will be about in the end, whether it will be a collection of short storied or one massive arc all I do know is I hope you enjoy it. I will be trying to post at least one new segment every 2 weeks. Because I don't know where it may take be I can't guarantee it will be PG-13, however, any parts that have a more adult theme will be omitted in the posts and I will state this. If you want the uncensored, unedited versions just PM me and I'll send it your way. Well I'll stop her and get to posting. I will appologise now for the double post but, I think it's better this way. Thanks for reading, Psyche, The Neko in the Straight Jacket |

HERETIC Life is the most precious commodity in this world and one we all take for granted every day. Without this very basic and yet extremely complex component none of us would be here and yet so few realise how fragile it truly is, doctors, nurses, police, paramedics, fire-fighters all of them have to confront just how fragile this thing is, able to be cut down by almost any act and we humans who profess to be the pinnacle of evolution are truly the weakest of them all. We are so stuck so immobile at the top of this so called hierarchy that we call evolution that when a true threat showed itself we could not adapt naturally. A humble virus designated HIV was the beginning of our undoing over a century ago now it was found and by its end infected nearly ninety percent of the populace. Then it evolved, just as we were learning to fight it off, to control it with drugs it became HHLV, The Human Haemolytic Virus, attacking the T Cells first then moving on more rapidly to attack all other blood cells replicating and dividing so fast we had no chance, those infected died in a matter of days. Asymptomatic in the beginning it was initially referred to as RAIDS, Rapid onset Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, believed to be a new strain of the dreaded virus but, the later symptoms that took hold were far too severe so we turned to medical science looking for a cure, a chance to survive and that was when the greatest mistake in human history was made, we became the architects of our own destruction in search of the salvation science offered us. Their solution was simple, like fight fire with fire they would fight a virus with another virus and thus PV1 was created. Paradoxyal Virus 1 or PV1 was so called because being infected by a virus to combat a virus seemed insane but, at the time no one truly realised what a Hell Mary pass it would turn out to be. It all started fifty years ago, given this supposed cure government stoke piled the virus and released it from airships converted to spray and contain the gas containing this new virus. The earth was covered in fine white haze like steam for twelve hours and then there was nothing. Everyone had been infected whether it was vaccine or cure it mattered not. For a time it seemed to have worked. It didn’t have any noticeable effect on the natural flora or fauna and those infected with these once indestructible viruses were making full recoveries. Humanity celebrated, they were truly the super beings they thought themselves. Brought to the very brink of destruction and then pulled themselves back, some thanked God for giving them the knowledge, others claimed that Humans they had surpassed god and broken the chains of fate and a few decades of prosperity begun as their triumph seemed complete. Their greatest worries assuaged and the dangers of the world kept at bay once more. War, peace, trading, inventing, the world continued on as it always had as scientists and doctors treated the problems that came their way, advances in cancer treatment and immunology being made thanks to the help of new Paradoxyal viruses. In the end though humanity should not meddle into such things, in creating something, something within them had to change also and fifty years after the mass infection of the world PV1 the true horror of what they had done would be shown to them, not in their children or grandchildren but, their great grandchildren. To protect humanity PV1 didn’t just attack the virus, it attacked the host as well making it impossible for them to be infected. These small genetic aberrations, deletions here, inversions, cross linking went unnoticed because they were so small but, those in the later generations felt the strain as their DNA became more and more screwed up and unreadable, finally reaching its climax in those born too late to make a difference. The frequency of problems conceiving increased dramatically year on year, miscarriages becoming so common place that it was once said the for every child a mother had she had lost four more. Then when the rate of miscarriage began to drop infant mortality started to raise, birth defects, still births, spontaneous idiopathic organ failures claimed many am infants life, to the point where those who had normal children were the ones in minority. Yet as these apparently healthy children grew it became apparent that humanity was no longer what it had once been. A disturbingly high proportion of children were showing inhuman traits, excessive strength, acute sense and certain psychic phenomena. Although these were still only in the minority as the genome stabilised once more it was decided that the Paradoxyal viruses had found, what was later termed, the ‘Key’ to evolution and these abnormal children became the guinea pigs for the rest of the world. Labs, centres, institutes were opened to welcome and contain this new breed of people as the world came together in a new and untied cause creating the Human Evolution Research, Education, Training & Investigation Coalition, referred to by many as HERETIC. This could be seen as both the beginning and the end of humanity but, the only ones who have the right to decide that are the generations who have to live from now own, what will they decide. |

The golden rays of the midmorning sun just cresting the trees outside shone through the windows of the classroom turning a lock of long blond hair to turn into a shimmering curtain as one of the classes occupants looked out the window creating a sight that would enthral any man. The girls soft and gentle features couldn’t have been given justice by any artist of pen or brush as the dancing golden strands framed her face perfectly. A Goddess looking out on the world. This was the only way to describe the young woman sat at her desk, her baby blue eyes twinkling in the light showing a strange mixture of sadness and happiness dancing in those irises, as she exuded a sense of loneliness that came from those who were placed above the rest by society, regal or celebrity, it mattered not since it was a lone existence among the crowds. She was a lady that everyone noticed but, few truly understood yet no one ever seemed to notice it. Even now in the classroom surrounded by everyone she seemed isolated, lost. Stares came towards her, some enthralled, some scared other apprehensive or envious and despite the closeness of the desks and the other students sat around her she seemed somehow isolated and separated. A half smile curled her lips but, there was no depth to it, it was simply fixed there to show the world to put up a front that she was a part of the group around her, that she didn’t notice the atmosphere around her of awe and hatred and this alone allowed her to mingle with the very people that made her feel so isolated. A facade to keep up appearances while remaining nothing more than a caged bird within a society that both loved and was in fear of her. A piece of white chalk came flying across the room with scary precision and struck Ashley in the middle of the forehead between her eyes. Blinking slightly startled she rubbed away the chalk imprint from between her eyes and pulled her gaze away from Cynthia and returned her attention back to the class that she found herself rather reluctantly sitting in. She had been caught out yet again but, the classes were so boring and sitting behind Cynthia, the girl for who her heart sang for made it a lot more difficult to concentrate on the rather laborious lectures that the instructors gaze in a rather feeble attempt at imparting knowledge to her fellow classmates. It was just so much more fun to watch Cynthia and the rest of the class than try and feign interest in lesson, most of which she already knew anyway. Yet as she finally managed to focus her mind on something other than the girl before her and actually look at the tutor who had just assaulted her with a piece of chalk her mind jumped into gear. She had been caught out that was for sure but, there was ways around everyone and even if she couldn’t weasel her way out of a punishment she could usually find a way to mollify the lecturer and have her sentence reduced to something a little more minor. It was a skill of necessity in all honesty it happened so often in this institute that it had almost become a game for her, to see how far she could push things and how much she could manipulate the teachers to slip away unpunished and this particular lecturer was one known for making it particularly easy to slip away unscathed, if you knew how that is. “Miss Jones” came the rather stern if slightly high pitch and quaking tone of Dr Tree as he struggled to keep himself under control “Do you think you could stop staring into space for long enough to answer my question.” Ashley squashed the urge to sigh and roll her eyes, even in this enlightened age it seemed no one had yet picked up on the fact or were willing to admit that she was lesbian, it was bloody obvious what she had been staring at was not space but, no one ever seemed willing to admit, especially not the instructors, maybe it made them uncomfortable and the students were probably too self absorbed, that was the problem with this place. Too uptight, plus until they actually conceded the fact she felt slightly oppressed within the confines of the school as if they weren’t admitting it because it was somehow wrong and if by ignoring it she would somehow change. Well it did however, seem to afford her a little wiggle room since they were so stubbornly ignoring it or ignorant to it that subconsciously they tried to avoid certain situations which, if she steered things the right way went in her favour as they became flustered and forgot what prompted the original reprimand. However, with Tree this was not some that was necessary. Known for being highly technical and incomprehensible even amongst his colleagues all she had to do was fight the slight curling of the corner of her mouth to prevent a sly smile giving her away as she kept a straight face and asked as innocently as she could. “Sorry Sir my minds gone blank, I couldn’t quite follow what you were just saying, that’s probably why my eyes looked so vacant just know. Do you think you could possibly rephrase the question?” A slightly confused and self critical look came over his face as he started to wonder if he had been too technical once again and she knew she had him. Weaselling out of tough situations was a skill that had proved all too necessary and convenient in this school, not that she had ever had to use it before she got labelled. “Fine then Miss Jones” He said in a somewhat calculated manner that Ashley believed meant he was carefully selecting his words as he did so that he wasn’t misunderstood for a second time, although if she wasn’t so busy patting herself on the back she may have noticed a slight glint in his eye and an edge to his voice that meant she may not be in for as easy a time as she had suspected a moment ago. “Would you be so kind as to name the compound that I’ve drawn out on the board behind me?” Allowing her eyes to slide from Dr Tree and up to the board she finally allowed a sweet and innocent smile to curl her lips before trying to look on a look of mild confusion as if trying to remember something, when in all actuality she was already well aware of the actual answer. She had gotten away with it and now all that was left was to do the studious student act put on a show to convince him she was seriously trying to come up with the correct answer to his simple question that she as sure would tax most in her class but, left her rather bored. This was mainly because she had learnt all of this already, ever since she had been transferred here it was like she had left the world of proper education that she had experienced behind and was now locked up with some remedial class for the rest of eternity. Stifling a yawn she closed her eyes to block out the slight fuzzy chemical formula and continue with the act while she was in fact enjoying the engrained image of Cynthia in her mind before taking what would hopefully appear as a well reasoned stab at the answer so not to seem too far in advance of her cellmates life being enough hell for her already in this school. “3-methylbutyl 2-phenylacetate sir” Dr Tree furrowed his brow although as he did it she knew something was wrong, turning to look at the board behind him and back at her she knew she had gotten away with her little indiscretion but, this time it was simply out of luck since she had apparently impressed the man.. “Correct Miss Jones but, how the hell you pulled that one out of your arse I really have no idea since this is for my preparations for the next class. Will anyone here be kind enough to inform Miss Jones what I actually asked her before this show of abnormal intelligence from her?” The class fell silent and she could feel all eyes on her and at that moment she would have given anything to simply vanish. As someone told her what she had actually been asked all she found herself doing was cursing under her breath. This wasn’t good, she was already known for being a swot but, now it was obvious she had been hiding how intelligent she actually was. This may very well be the end of her social life here, not that she had much of one as it was anyway. She’d been transferred in late so that meant that everyone had their own group of friends, the cliques were filled with people and she didn’t really fit into any of them anyway. Too unique even for a place like this and that alone was saying something, plus the way the social hierarchy here worked was completely different from her previous school and no one really wanted to be seen with an odd ball like her anyway. Now having been exposed for being more intelligent and deceptive than any of them had anticipated she was going to have an even harder time than she had had before. The problem was here at Sigma Minor, a heretic run institution, being plain smart was about as useful as chocolate teapot and put her right at the bottom of the food chain in this school no matter what. She had thought that if she kept her head down and didn’t seem overly smart, just enough to maybe get into one of the studying cliques she may have a chance to actually have some kind of social life; that idea was now in tatters. The only reason she was here was because she hadn’t managed to skip out on a mandatory genetics test run by her old High School. It was so frustrating, she had never shown any form of abnormal ability, even her intelligence which was quite remarkable at times wasn’t anywhere near HERETIC levels, otherwise she wouldn’t have been stuck in this dreary class. She didn’t care that PV1 had screwed up her genetics, all she wanted was a normal life, yet, having been labelled ‘one of them’ no normal school was willing to touch her for fear of a lawsuit if some form of power did awaken and their students were hurt or of the public uproar of having such a dangerous student in a normal school. It might not have been so bad but, she’d skipped out on all the previous genetic tests because of one thing or another so she wasn’t even caught early hence the late transfer not that it mattered. Without an ability she felt like an odd duck or maybe more like a wingless one. Heck those around her had super human strength, speed, reflexes, senses or things like telekinesis or pyrokinesis heck one could even fly for God’s Sake and here she was having to rely on the all too human traits of quick thinking, wit and guile just to survive day by day in this damn academy. Of course this meant that she couldn’t take part in half the lessons since they were designed for enhancing their genetic talents of which hers were strangely absent. Zoning out of the lesson once more she allowed the words of the instructor to wash over her like white noise not interested in what the old man had to say, he had just completely blown her cover, although she had to admit it was as much her own fault as his since she should have realised something so complex was well above the level they were currently studying. This was not the life she had envisaged for herself, she had never been alone in her old school, social, friendly and smart she got along with everyone. Yet all those she had known melted away when it was discovered that she truly belonged in Sigma Minor and now she was stuck here, forced to live this rather lonely life as she battle on just hoping that at least when it was all over she was able to get a job, preferably as far away from HERETIC as she could possibly get. Sighing she turned back to her favourite view of all, that of her goddess but, found something surprising as her gaze fell upon the face of Cynthia turned to hers, twisted in her chair slightly, those glittering baby blue orbs capturing her heart in an instant her breath catching in her throat. The corners of her goddess’s mouth curled slightly into a truer smile than she had ever seen her given before and.... Ashley blinked and Cynthia had turned back to staring out the window, but, she could have sworn that in that moment where their eyes had met Cynthia had winked. Her heart beating faster than it ever had done she shook her head and tried to calm herself down. To be acknowledged, to see that smile of the person she so admired and yes dare say even loved. A shiver ran down Ashley’s spine, maybe it had been worth blowing her cover just for this moment. She settled down back to studying the room her eyes flicking back to Cynthia every now and again as the rest of the abysmal lesson passed in a haze of jumbled emotions, feelings, thoughts and fantasies. |
