The Giant Claw(1957)
May 31 2007, 12:42 PM
IMDb states the film was filmed in 1.37:1, that would be fullframe, wouldn't it?

Full frame is 1:33.1, and 1:37.1 is about a .04 variation, which doesn't seem like much. I say that because I remember watching the first R1 DVD of Gorgo in it's 1:66.1 aspect ratio, and the "black" areas at the top and bottom of the screen were very small, and that's with a variation of .33 from the academy ratio(aka full frame-1:33.1). My guess is that 1:37.1 is full frame or at least very close to it. shifty eyes

20 Million Miles To Earth(1957)
the scene with the beastie attacking the Golden Gate Bridge
That scene from It Came from Beneath The Sea(1955) has gained quite a bit of notoriety because there were only six tentacles on the giant octopus in the scene-I believe it was due to some kind of budgetary constraint.

How does 20 Million Miles To Earth rank in your favorites of the 50's? heyo

--The Green Slime
I have continued to scour various sites that post 2007 DVD releases but I'm not seeing anything about this title for Region 1. I'm thinking now it may be 2008, at the earliest, before we may see it on R1.

The Official Blu Ray & DVD "want" List
Speaking of DVD "wants", Kimi, have you pre-ordered the upcoming Classic Media "Ghidrah" and "Monster Zero" DVDs? I haven't. I'm going to be near the Best Buy a couple of miles from my residence on Tuesday, June 5th, and will drop in at BB and pick them up. :)

Theme of the NBA playoffs this year: The League is picking which teams move on instead of the players earning their way through the playoffs
Looks like NBA commish David Stern was watching some of the NBA pre-game shows and ESPN broadcasts in which analysts for both shows stated a Cavs-Spurs matchup would be the more entertaining series. I don't give a tinker's damn what Stern says about integrity, fairness, and consistency being important in how he does his job, or how referees do theirs...he's about the almighty dollar, period, and better ratings bring the NBA more bucks, which puts more $ in his pocket and in his goddamn pension. thumbs down

Miami Dolphins LB Joey Porter pleaded no contest in a Las Vegas court, via his attorney, and was ordered to pay a $1000 fine, the result of a scuffle between himself and Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Levi Jones outside a Vegas casino. Porter and Jones have a long history of talking trash, from Porter's days as a LB for the Pittsburgh Steelers, which is believed to have played a role in these two NFL players' angry verbal exchange inside the casino and the subsequent fisticuffs outside. Yes, Lee, I also managed to get the two-disc copy.

thumbs up
After I ordered(online) and received my 2-disc'er of Grizzly(1976) from Xploited Cinema I mailed my full framed DVD-R of this film to one of my best friends, who is also about my age. He told me after watching it that it brought back memories-he said he first saw it as a 14 year old at an outdoor drive in theater. Mr Green

1965 or 1966 may be correct

I did a little digging and found that the "draft" for the Vietman War took place in 1967. For more info on the history of selective service in the United States click the link:

Thankfully, he didn't suffer for too long
Yes, thankfully.
...it's tough on his family, but they said rather than watch him suffer any more than he did, they'd rather see him at peace
Completely understandable. I believe I would feel the same were it someone close to me. :(

they are always trying to create hoopla out of nothing or small things
And IMO the reason: television ratings.
...well Kobe will have to wait until he can opt out of his contract before he can start thinking about another ring
And that's after 2008 right? That is, the earliest he could be playing for another team, without being traded, is the 2009 NBA season.
Players don't understand that their massive contracts affect everyone in the organization
No doubt-I'm curious Trent. Were you a star NBA player would you be willing to take a pay cut(say a modest one) to help your team bring in another star player to improve your team's chances of making a deep(er) run in the playoffs? heyo

Mysteries of the modern world
The concept of invisibility is one that has been the subject of many books and magazine articles, and has also been featured in countless science-fiction films and television series. How much longer will it remain science fiction? Apparently, according to this article, not too much longer: http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20060715/bob9.asp

The subject of time travel is also one that has fascinated scientists for centuries. The question, of course: "Is time travel possible?" . There are still no definitive answers, and the scientific community is divided on the subject. Kobe won't be changing uniforms...why? Because he's screwed...his maxed out contract is the problem. That's why the Lakers are screwed up, Kobe's contract takes up too much of the salary cap and no one wants to pay that tax for going over that limit.

Very good point. The "Kobester" has already softened, somewhat, his "trade me" diatribe from earlier today. If the Lakers owner, Jerry Buss, is willing to talk with Kobe Bryant in private, admit he f*cked up in allowing this thing to get out into the media, and reassure Bryant that changes, that is, improvements in the Lakers will be made, this incident should blow over, despite ESPN's attempts to fan the flames on this "fire" with their discussion, ad nauseam, of this whole Kobe Bryant Vs Jerry Buss affair, during tonight's pre-game show prior to the Spurs-Jazz game. Veteran ESPN broadcaster Dan Patrick acted as if he wanted this incident to become an even bigger controversy. thumbs down

I'm not really sure, to be honest.  Dad was born in '39, so age might have been a factor.  He said he was more than ready to sign up with his unit for deployment, but the draft went into affect and he never was called up following his discharge.

If your father was born in 1939 then he would have been in his mid twenties(or a couple of years older) when the draft was instituted. I cannot remember the year of that draft-I'm thinking it came into effect during either 1965 or 1966. Does this sound right?
It would not have been your father's age that prevented the Army for sending him back out into the field. Did he have any kind of medical condition that would have disqualified him from further service? If not, then I'm at a loss as to why the Army would have denied him further service. On the plus side, he wasn't sent back out and into a region, and into a war, that ended up claiming thousands of U.S. soldiers and scarring a large segment of young men in our country-I say this with absolutely no disrespect intended to the memories of those men and women who served in Southeast Asia and never made it back. :(

and my step-Dad's best friend just passed away last night, from cancer. He was diagnosed, last week, began chemo on Friday and was gone, last night
What kind of cancer did he have? It sounds like he must have had it in his system awhile before he went to see a doctor. ?

Mom began small doses of insulin about two weeks ago and they are still in the stage where they are adjusting her doses, but she's doing OK

....probably helped that a year earlier, folks were scared to death by another beastie of nature gone wild.....Jaws

The common complaint I see in internet reviews of Grizzly(1976), and warranted I think, is the accusation that this 1976 film is simply a ripoff of 1975's Jaws, which I happen to agree with. Doesn't mean, IMO, that it can't be modestly entertaining, which is what I believe the film Grizzly is: nothing more and nothing less. I bought this movie on DVD, the 2-disc "Shriek Show" release, for reasons of nostalgia...and I admit partly out of fear it would soon be OOP. tongue-1

I also read in the IMDB "trivia" footnotes of Grizzly that execs from Warner Brothers, a studio interested at the time(1975) in funding the making of Grizzly, were very angry that Film Ventures International(FVI) beat them to the punch, so to speak, securing the rights to making the movie.

Just out of curiosity, Kimi, is your DVD copy of Grizzly the 2 disc'er from Shriek Show(Mediablasters)? heyo

Oops! My bad, Lee, please excuse my question in a previous post, asking if this film wasn't also going to see a DVD release in October

It's all good Kimi-to err is human, as they say. :)

As much as I am pleased to see what I feel is an underrated "werewolf" movie come to disc, I'm also still dismayed that no one has bothered to put The Boy Who Cried Werewolf(1973) on R1 DVD. nonono
