Son Of Godzilla(1967) has grown on me over the years. At first I considered it a mildly enjoyable Godzilla film, at best. Now, I like to watch it about twice a year(on DVD). The wireworks used to bring the Kamakiras, or giant mantises, to life is very good. I read that ten(10) separate wires were needed for each mantis, thirty all total since there are three of these giant insect monsters at the beginning of the film. I also liked Kumonga, his movements and his appearance-the moving mandibles look creepy and the giant spider leaves no doubt that it is a constant threat to both humans and other kaiju on Solgel Island. I have long considered the Musukogoji suit to be the worst looking of all the series of "G" films. That said I can tolerate it more now as my appreciation for this movie has grown. I also enjoyed seeing all of my favorite Toho actors in the cast: Yoshio Tsuchiya, Akira Kubo, Akihiko Hirata, Tadao Takashima, and even Susumu Kurobe(briefly-he was a pilot in the plane in the opening scene). Beverly Maeda looked very lovely. ![]() The island cinematography did look great. I liked the ending also. Godzilla did exactly, IMO, what he was supposed to do: protect and mentor Minya. thumbs up |
