I never really considered it being anyone else, so I guess my answer would be that I think Eastwoods nameless character was Duncan. I looked carefully at the guy shown in the flashbacks, who looked, somewhat, like Eastwood, and my thinking was that that resemblance was meant to suggest that the character was indeed Eastwood's character, presumably about fifteen or twenty years younger. Your "ghost" analogy was on the mark. An interesting way of looking at it. thumbs up
