I just watched The Defender(1994), a Jet Li feature in which he plays an elite Chinese Army commando and member of an elite unit known as Defenders-his latest assignment: he is hired as a bodyguard for the girlfriend(gorgeous Kristie Chung tongue-1 ) of a powerful and wealthy Hong Kong telecommunications magnate. While protecting her from various and sundry assassins(shooting and/or beating the hell out of them all), John Chang(Jet Li) begins to fall in love with the beauty he has been assigned to protect. During one attack on the beauty, Chang kills the brother of an infamous assassin. That assassin, of course well-trained in the martial arts and a bad-ass in his own right, seeks revenge against Chang, and a climactic battle takes places in the large villa where Chang has his assignment hidden. -----Observations: a typical Jet Li feature-lots of action, violence and shootouts. The dubbing was mediocre at best, and rather poor at worst. Not as good as Black Mask(1996),Kiss Of The Dragon(2001), or The One(2002), but still worth a look. I bought it used for around $9.99. Would make a nice rental IMO. The film is in widescreen(1.85:1) and has scene selection and subtitles on/off but no extras.
