I just watched The Curse Of The Werewolf(1961) a Hammer Studios horror classic. Set in Spain, the story revolves around the unfortunate heredity of a young Spaniard(played by Oliver Reed). Reed's dormant lycanthropic genes begin to stir from dormancy. After he moves away and begins his first real job in a village, it isn't long before the moon is full...(no spoilers). Oliver Reed is, IMO, very good at playing the sympathetic character of the man who would be werewolf. As usual, the backgrounds for this film(as with all "Hammer" films) lend realism to the film, and the assortment of characters in this movie, good, bad, and somewhat bizarre, make nice additions to the central storyline of a good man with a very bad curse. This film makes my "Top five werewolf films". The movie is part of The Hammer Horror Series 2-disc set, with eight classic Hammer horror films. thumbs up Pictured: image of the DVD cover for "The Hammer Horror Series" |
