I think they may have been referring to one of those other kinds of discs that we talked about in the other thread, Lee, that are capable of storing much more data. Or they could have been just refferring to an entirely new technology like a flash card or digital downloads as we also discussed. Browsing the pages of engadget and joystiq.com, I noticed a few other news bits regarding this format war: - Microsoft says it isn't entirely against the blu-ray technology, and would embrace it if consumer demand were high enough. However for now they said they still back HD-DVD. - Paramount took a somewhat neutral stance as well, issuing a statement saying that while they are backing HD-DVD still, they are not closing themselves off to the possibility of blu-ray. - Michael Bay, the director of Transformers, continues to speak publicly on his dissatisfaction for his film not being available on Blu-ray. He has stated he believes it's a better format, and wants to see release on blu-ray. Regarding this news, I think Paramount is really backpedalling here. They just were supposedly paid over 150 million by the HD-DVD camp and now they seem a bit uneasy to stick only with HD-DVD. I've heard rumors that there was a "back out" clause in their contract with Toshiba, we will see what happens. |
