I just watched three recent DVD purchases, neither of which I would recommend as a purchase(unless in a used bin at Blockbuster). The first: Bloodrayne(2006), starring Michael Madsen, Michelle Rodriquez, Ben Kingsley, and Kristanna Loken(looking gorgeous tongue-1 ) as "Rayne", the dhampir(half-human/half vampire). The movie is directed by Uwe Boll, who is generally regarded with great disdain among the more serious and hardcore fans of horror. After watching this film I can see why tongue-1 . The acting is wooden, the sets looked fabricated and hardly authentic(the movie supposedly takes place in the 18th century), and the gore is excessive, almost emphasized by Boll, who has been blasted by film critics for his films. There are some good combat scenes, to be sure, and the makeup effects are okay at times. This film is worth a Netflix or Blockbuster Online queue, I think, but not much else.

The second: High Tension-an intense foreign horror film(French), that can be viewed either in subtitles or in English(dubbed) This film has plenty of over-the-top gore, but also plenty of suspense and dread, generated from the bad guy. Speaking of the bad guy, there's a major plot twist that blew my doors off :ph43r:
For any fan of horror I recommend this one. Much better, IMO, than Hostel.

The third: A Sound Of Thunder-based on the Ray Bradbury short story, this film is a tale set in 2055 where time travel is possible, and harnessed by one company, Time Safari, in order to allow people to travel back in time to kill an allosaurus. There are rules in place for our time travellers in this film-when one of them is broken time is thrown out of whack and suddenly carnivorous plants and dino descendants(part dino, part baboon, total bad dispositions) are running loose, preying on the citizenry. (no spoilers) The CGI is, IMO, subpar in this film. The acting is adequate. Again, would make a good rental I think. The film has it's moments, there just aren't enough of them. From what I have heard this movie absolutely bombed at the box office. After watching it I can see why. dead
