Just finished reading Lucifer's Hammer, written by Larry Niven and David Pournelle. The book, a work of fiction, chronicles the impact of a massive comet, dubbed "Lucifer's Hammer", with the Earth, including the events leading up to the collision, and the catastrophic consequences of the comet's impact with our planet. The comet actually breaks up into smaller pieces as it enter's Earth atmosphere, many of these "pieces" anywhere from a mile to several miles wide in diameter,, and weighing billions of tons. Some of the comet's fragments, travelling at over 10,000 MPH, impact at sea, generating monstrous tsunamis(tidal waves), some in excess of 1500 feet in height, that wipe out coastal areas of scores of countries across the globe, including one that essentially creates a channel across the state of Florida. Other impacts spawn enormous forest fires and earthquakes. The last one-third of the book entails how the surviving members of humanity survive, around what may, or may not be, the only undamaged nuclear reactor on Earth. A terrific book. I am planning on reading next another book by these two writers, called Footfall, about an invasion of Earth by aliens who resemble elephants. nod |
