Chapter 7: The Mutation The darkness was melding away. The Gojirasaur could barely see. Everything was a blur: what had happened? Everything around him was flat, empty, ashen. As the Gojirasaur got up, it had a newfound instinct: to get up with it’s arms. It obliged, placing the palms of it’s much more dexterous, four-fingered hands on the ground, then pushing down to get up. The monster staggered a bit and peered into the clouds of ash surrounding it. He felt good…powerful, but scared. confuseed. He lurched into the ashes lumbering forward blindly, looking for some way to see what made him feel so different. The list of new sensations was endless: he could feel something new on his back, and heard the sound of bone clattering together there. His tail felt longer, and when he chanced a look at it, he saw that it looked long and powerful, studded with little bone bumps on top. He stood more erect, and had stockier, more powerful legs. But strangest of all, was an odd, tingling sensation coming from what felt like a new organ contained within his back. Then he had a thought: the lake. There were several lakes on Lagos Island. One was his favorite. It had always been crystal clear, like glass. Even ripples had seemed weaker on it’s smooth surface. But the Gojirasaur’s favorite thing about that lake was that whenever he looked in, he saw himself, staring right back. He loved watching the reflection mimic his own movements. Now, he could use it to his advantage. All he would have to do would be to find the lake and look inside. Then he would get an answer. There it was, up ahead. The lake. He stomped heavily over to it, and peered in, but all he saw was the ashes clogging the water. Taken aback, the Gojirasaur began to patrol the edge of the water, looking for a cleat spot. Finally, he found one; a spot where the water was clear enough to view his own reflection. He lumbered over, and gazed in. He was shocked to see his new body: His skin was now deep, almost blackish grey (he knew this was not the ash, which he had already shaken off), his chest was thick and robust. His eyes were evil and cruel, and he had two rows of fangs in his mouth. But the biggest surprise yet came at the top of his head, where a small, lighter grey row of bumps began. The row ran down the back of his head, growing bigger and more jagged as they grew down, until they had, reaching his lower neck, become jagged, silver spines. They continued to grow along down his back, giving his a unique, fearsome look. The spines reached their peak in size just above his hips, where they were in three rows and stuck out as far as his torso was thick. At that, they began to shrink down again to a tiny row of bumps running down to the tip of his tail. But the biggest difference was the scale of the lake to the dinosaur. He gazed out across it’s filthy, ash-choked surface, and could see by his view of the other bank…the lake was smaller. No…he was bigger. And much bigger, at that. He gazed down at the ground… he was much bigger. Massive, in fact. In the last few hours, his life had changed so dramatically, his home destroyed, his body changed…everything had changed. He had felt hungry when he woke up, but no longer. In fact, Organizer G-1 had actually absorbed the lingering radiation levels further, and converted them into a food source, fueling Godzilla limitlessly as long as he stayed on what was left of Lagos Island. And indeed, he would. Looking upward, the monster unleashed a howl of anger and despair. Godzilla had been born. |
