Chapter 8: Anguirus

1954
Lagos Island

For a further 5 years, Godzilla dwelled on Lagos Island. He needed no food; the radiation fueled him. He had returned to the lake that the Angilasaur has plunged into and had found that rock from a destroyed mountain had buried the lake in tons of broken stone. Godzilla had little to do on the Island; but he had developed a strange new liking for destruction. He spent most of his time leveling the towering rock structures across the Island. No matter how often he did this, he never got tired of it.

But something else had changed. Often, he would feel something inside. Something else, like a different mindset. He could feel it writhing around inside, yearning to get out. Several times it almost did, and Godzilla was tempted to let it. These few times, he felt unbearable power welling up inside of him. The new organ, concealed just below his dorsal spines, tingled with rage, and sometimes, he saw a flash of blue light dart across the ashen landscape. But always, Godzilla feared this power, and suppressed it. He had a deep feeling that finally embracing this power would set him on a set-in-stone destiny of cruelty, war, pain, and chaos. He did not want this to happen.

One sunny day, in 1954, Godzilla stood in the blank, desolate, rocky landscape near the pile of rocks under which the old Angilasaur’s skeleton surely sat. He contemplated the Angilasaur…his old enemy. He remembered how, in the years following the death of the Angilasaur’s mate, it had always sought a confrontation. But the naďve Gojirasaur had never responded in kind. Godzilla often pondered how easy it would be to kill the Angilasaur now, with his newfound power…that power…

Godzilla’s head snapped upward. It was coming again…the power, the rage, the chaos…he couldn’t control it. After 5 years, it was finally going to break out! A brilliant, radiant, silvery-blue light flashed briefly across the whitish spines adorning Godzilla’s back, then returned, glowing brighter than the sun… Godzilla could feel the organ in his back pulsing wildly as it fed radioactivity into his spines to be converted into powerful, radioactive plasma, then fed it back through the organ into Godzilla’s windpipe. A bright, shimmering ball of neon blue plasma manifested in the back of Godzilla’s throat.

Godzilla knew he couldn’t cold it in, he had to unleash it. Opening his mouth, Godzilla let the blast gush forth into a stream of radiation, heat, and kinetic force that tore into the pile of rocks before him. A huge plume of fire shot up, and several chunks of rock were tossed away, cracked, burning. The gushing river of what looked like pure light continued to burn into the mountain face, until Godzilla finally died down his power. Smoke, black with a bluish tint, poured up into the sky, coming off of Godzilla’s spines. Where the mysterious beam had struck, A deep, burnt crater was dug in, and the rock was cracked.

But something was wrong. The cracks were becoming wider, and snaking outward. The ground trembled, and the rock began crumbling away. Godzilla took a surprised step backward, looking down as the rocks were broken away from within. A massive hole appeared within the stone. From this hole, there came a deep, reverberating, echoing cry. Godzilla knew he had heard it before, but it took him a moment to remember where. A dusty figure was rising from the rock, and as it shook itself off, Godzilla could do no more than stare in disbelief.

I find the term "Zombie" to be offensive. I prefer to be called Vitality Impaired.
