Despite spending more time on the computer I still manage to read, mostly the newspaper, on occasion books related to my field, landscaping, my quarterly issue of G-Fan, and a monthly magazine I receive that pertains to commercial and residential lawn maintenance. I try, too often without success, to read books. But I do try. Currently I am reading Krakatoa-The Day The World Exploded :August 27, 1883 by Simon Winchester. The book chronicles the explosion and eruption of Krakatoa, a small volcanic island in a South Pacific atoll near Java, in 1883, which still ranks as one of the most powerful explosions ever recorded on Earth. The catastrophic eruption of this small island volcano caused tsunamis(huge tidal waves), some in excess of 130 feet in height, that killed over 40,000 people. The blast itself caused shockwaves(air and ground) that circled the Earth seven times, and the strata blasted into the atmosphere would remain there for years, causing noticeable climactic changes in many neighboring geogaphic regions. The book also looks at the resulting political changes that occured in the neighboring islands, most notably Java. ----Post what you're reading here, anytime. Feel free to discuss. Post other good books you've read. All replies welcome. :) |
