The year 1966 was a busy one. In addition to Ultraman another giant superhero television series made it's debut(actually just beating Ultraman's release date by a short time): Space Giants(released as "Ambassador Magma In Japan" in Japan) a series featuring Goldar, his wife Silvar, their son Gam, a family of aliens with the abilty to transform themselves into rockets. Also residing on the island is "Methusan", an old wizard and advisor to Goldar. They reside on a volcanic island. Goldar and family must protect the Earth from the evil alien "Rodak". Unlike the Ultraman series, which is "told" in an episode-to-episode basis, each one featuring a different monster(s), this series is told in story "arcs". Gam befriends Mikko,a young boy who, blowing into a special device that sounds like a dogwhistle, can summon Gam, Silvar, or Goldar, depending on how many times he blows its. Another difference is the size of the superhero-Ultraman was about 40 meters tall, like the monsters he battled. In Space Giants Goldar appears to be more in the 50 foot range, though some camera angles and shots make him look larger. The special effects are not as good, I think, as it's counterpart series, Ultraman, but they compare generally well with that of some of the Showa Gamera films. Discuss the series Space Giants here, your thoughts, ctritiques, questions, observations, related links, etc. All replies welcome. :) |
