On December 16, 1967 Toho released Son Of Godzilla. The story: A small group of scientists conduct weather-control experiments on Solgel Island, however the experiment goes wrong, resulting in irradiated rainstorms and heat that enlarge a species of indigenous insects on the island, Kamikiras(mantises). Making things even more interesting for the scientific team is the emergence of Minya(from an egg) on the island and the arrival of Godzilla himself(from the ocean depths). Godzilla proceeds to give some "fatherly" lessons to his son on how to emit the oral beam, as well as rendering assistance to Minya in it's skirmish with the giant mantises. Any humor that creeps into play between father and son kaiju is rudely interrupted by Kumonga, an enormous spider that, accidentally awakened, erupts up and out of a ravine to menace both the humans and other kaiju on the island... -----Observations: I have come to like this movie more with the passage of time, though some things about the film still annoy me greatly: 1. The Godzilla suit used in this film is horrendous 2. Minya's "roar" is an intermittent mix of squeaking and another sound that by itself is more like the braying of a jackass thumbs down ----That said there are positives: 1. Kumonga-a creepy and effectively rendered giant arachnid 2. the scene where Godzilla and Minya huddle in the artificially-generated snowfall at the end of the film is truly memorable, a touch of "humanity" revealed in these monsters :) ---This film is also enjoying a quality Reg.1 DVD release(letterboxed and a good print) courtesy of Columbia/Tri-Star----Post your take on this movie, and anything else regarding this film, here. :) |
