Chapter 11: The Oxygen Destroyer

Emiko sighed. “No, but I have a feeling I’m about to”.
He continued, as If he had not heard the sarcasm. “It’s a marvelous chemical. A combination of volatile acids and toxins, that’s totally neutralized by extreme cold. In the air, it causes your garden-variety explosion. Underwater, it works more like acid, only very fast acting and easier to control. And I have put this substance into an object that I believe can control it perfectly, converting into a devastating stream of destructive, toxic chemicals. I call it the Oxygen Destroyer”.

At this, he gestured to something sitting on a desk: a 3 foot tall, glass cylinder, containing a tiny silver sphere held there by two long rods that went into the metal on the ends. It was hooked up by several wires and tubes that led to a large computer-like machine, about 6 feet tall, sitting on the floor, tipped with what looked like a gun barrel. “Isn’t it marvelous?” he inquired as she studied the machine. “And now that you’re here, we can test it!” he finished.
“Test it? On what?” she asked. He pointed to the fish tank.

“Here we go!” he said as he hooked up a long, rubber hose to the barrel-like extension, then put the other end of the hose in the fish tank. The fish swarmed around it curiously, wondering what the odd thing that entered their realm was. As Dr. Serizawa went back to the Oxygen Destroyer, Emiko spoke. “Daisuke…are you sure this is safe?”
“Of course, my love, of course…there is nothing to be worried about”. Still, Emiko took a step back. She was beginning to wonder: Why was he so obsessed in making a weapon? After flipping a few switches, Dr. Serizawa said, with a rather excited voice, “Now! It’s starting!”

Indeed, the Oxygen Destroyer was now making low, crackling noises. The silver substance in the sphere was draining away, shooting down one of the rods into the connector to the wiring. Inside the tank, bubbles were beginning to appear randomly throughout the water. With increasing rapidity, more and more bubbles rose up, turning the tank into a boiling, frothing mess. Soon, the silver Micro-Oxygen was gone, and the bubbles began dissipating. The fake scenery put in for the fish was a thin layer of gray goop at the bottom of the tank, and the fish were but skeletons.

Emiko shrieked and clapped her hands to her mouth, shocked at what she was seeing. “Isn’t it beautiful?” Dr. Serizawa was saying. “A perfect weapon! A cheap, easily usable explosive on land, a powerful acid in the water. Perfect!”. But Emiko was not sharing his insane smile. “Daisuke…isn’t this a bit dangerous? I mean, yes, you’ve created sort of an “ultimate weapon”, but is that really a good thing?” Dr. Serizawa’s smile vanished. He then said, rather angrily, “Of course it’s a good thing, why wouldn’t it be?”
“Now, please, Daisuke, don’t overreact, but what if the world isn’t quite ready for this? What if you’ve overstepped your boundaries?”

Now, Dr. Serizawa was definitely looking angry. “Emiko, you don’t understand, do you? The world needs to advance, to go forward! The Oxygen Destroyer is deadly, yes, but is that not the point of a weapon?”
Now it was Emiko’s turn to get angry. “No, Daisuke, it’s you who doesn’t understand! You’ve gone too far! The Oxygen Destroyer is too strong!” And with that, she turned and opened the door. “Just think about what I’ve said, Daisuke!” and she left.

I find the term "Zombie" to be offensive. I prefer to be called Vitality Impaired.
