Chapter 12: Mike Lendriks Deep within the Pacific Ocean, a long, reptilian figure swam forth, crocodile-like. It had feral eyes and a series of jagged spines on it’s back. Godzilla continued towards the ahead destination. In just a few days, he would reach Japan. As he swam onward, something else, equally large, it’s wounds being healed by the soothing, cold water, tailed the massive dinosaur. Already mostly recovered, Anguirus pursued his enemy. In the city of Tokyo, lights began to seem brighter as the sunlight dimmed down. The evening sky would have been dotted with stars in any natural part of the world, but the city lights glared and made the distant suns invisible. Over Tokyo Bay, an airplane swung low, the pilot scanning for the airport. As the craft came lower, landing gear extended, one passenger was destined to be a witness to one of the most eventful days in history. The passenger plane came down, driving along the blacktop, losing momentum all the time. As it finally stopped, the passengers filed out into the airport, relieved to be getting fresh air and decent exercise for the first time in hours. One man looked somewhat out-of-place: dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and khaki shorts, the American stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the rest of the crowd. Michael Lendriks stretched and looked around, before heading over to the help desk to figure out where to go for his luggage. “Um…hello?” he said to the Japanese woman, quite lovely with blond highlights in her hair. “Do you speak English?” To his relief, she smiled and said, quite clearly, “Yes.” “Uh, hi. My name’s Mike Lendriks, and I was wondering where to pick up my stuff?” “Of course” she said as she typed. “First time in Japan?” “Ah, no, third. I’m a journalist. International politics, you know”. “I see…” after the brief introduction, she got the area for his luggage, and, after retrieving it, he searched for a phone book to find a decent hotel. It was 9:48 by the time Mike Lendriks checked into his hotel, tired and ready for an early night. As he set up his temporary home, and got ready for bed, the talkative man couldn’t shake off the bad feeling that something was going to go wrong on this trip. He had had this feeling ever since the day when his boss had walked into his office and given him the assignment. Still, he didn’t think anything of it. Hid fear of some kind of chaotic happening was pushed out of his mind by his increasing boredom with his job. Five years back, when an eager, young Mike Lendriks got first jump on an amazing story about unauthorized testing in the south pacific, and was offered a job by one of the top international news companies in the world, he had thought he would be getting the same breed of story. He was wrong. Ever since getting the job, it had been constant traveling, crappy pay, no advancement, and stories about as interesting as a number 2 pencil. And he was getting sick of it. In fact, when he got back, he would put a permanent end to it! His mind was made up; when he returned too America, the first thing he would do would be to ask for a pay raise, and threaten to quit if they refused. Finally, he would be taking control of his life. Grabbing the bull by the horns, so to speak. Yes. It would all happen when he got back…when he got back…unless I don’t get back. Mike’s final thoughts for the day ended on this rather disturbing note, which also affected his nightmares. He saw images of fearsome, reptilian creatures battling; one, massive and spiky, the other, a flaming, grey titan of rage and muscle. He would soon know the significance of this dream. |
