Several weeks ago, while looking at horror movie trailers on YouTube, a trailer caught my interest and I subsequently found and ordered the DVD of the film from DeepDiscount.com. I'm referring to The Stuff, a horror film produced and directed by Larry Cohen, released to theaters back in 1985 by New World Pictures.

I cannot imagine that anyone, including dedicated fans of horror movies(like myself), would think of The Stuff(1985) as a quality horror film. I can see why this movie would develop its own cult following because it definitely has its moments.

The film's story: an industrial saboteur and former FBI agent(played by a pre "Law And Order" Michael Moriarity), a pre-teen boy and the owner of an advertising firm(played by Andrea Marcovicci) all discover that there's something definitely wrong with the latest craze America has for "The Stuff", a food product that is for sale just about everywhere and is seemingly consumed by just about everyone. "The Stuff", turns out, has a life of its own and is addictive to anyone who eats it. The white, yogurt-like material turns many who eat it into crazed zombies as well. It's up to the small group who know the truth to try and stop the entire American populace from becoming slaves to this edible material.

The cast includes Michael Moriarity as "Rutherford", the saboteur and disgraced former FBI agent, Paul Sorvino as a ridiculously over the top Army colonel who somehow believes "The Stuff" to possibly be some sort of subversion created by communists, and Garrett Morris as a laughable(and not in a good way) former cookie franchise owner looking to get his company back from those he claims "stole" it from him.

The plot is literally all over the place and the acting is stale, save for some funny moments involving the characters. The special effects are mostly predictable and average but there are some scenes of gore and violence to keep most horror movie fans at least somewhat interested: the yogurt like "Stuff" that oozes in and out of its victims, one scene where a "Stuff" infected great dane attacks its owner, and "Rutherford"(Michael Moriarity) punching the various crazed assailants, full of the "Stuff", as well as blasting away at them with various firearms.

Th Stuff is part "The Blob" and part zombie film. Serious fans of horror movies should buy this older title, which retails at DeepDiscount for about $6.00. More casual horror fans may find this title a "miss".
