EPISODE II: OPERATION EXCAVATION April 10th, 2044 Iron Mines outside Malmö, south Sweden Foreman Olov entered the mine, confused. All his workers had abandoned the site under the past few days, and nobody had stayed long enough to even say why. A bit into the mine, he suddenly saw something that made him scream in horror. It was a man. Or at least half of him. It was the remains of a human, but what had caused this was unknown. At least, until the foreman noticed the mass of saliva around the body. Olov was terrified, and ran for his life. He needed help, fast. Whatever was down there, he didn’t want to know, and didn’t want it to get him too. As he ran, he heard a loud, laughing sound… C.A.T HQ, Stefansborg “A monster in the mine?” Johan said. “Are you sure, Mr Karlsson?” “Yes, I’m sure”, Olov said. He had gone straightly to C.A.T with the case, not trusting the police to deal with such a situation. “It had eaten half of one of my men, and laughed as I ran off.” “Hmm”, Emelie thought. “It could be… no, it’s not possible…” “What is it, boss?” Tanja asked. “Do you know anything?” “I… I think it could be a… giant.” “A giant?” Casper repeated. “As in, Jotunheim and Midgård and all that crap?” Emelie nodded. “When Sweden started its newfound mining operations, strange disappearances began occurring all over the country. People began to believe that we had awakened creatures of old times, but I didn’t believe it. But I just can’t find any other explanations…” “We’ll look it up”, Peter smiled. “Don’t worry, boss. Mr Karlsson, please direct us to the mine…” Iron Mines outside Malmö, south Sweden About an hour later, C.A.T members Tanja, Peter and Johan arrived at the Malmö Iron Mine. Foreman Karlsson had been left behind at the C.A.T HQ. “This place feels so dead”, Tanja said when they stepped out of their jets. “It’s like… I don’t know. It’s hard to tell how, but you simply know when a place is completely dead.” “I guess”, Peter nodded. “Shall we enter the mine directly?” “Are you crazy?” Casper said. “If there’s something down there that likes to hang around killing people, we can’t just walk right in! There’s got to be some better way…” He cut off directly, because somebody emerged from the mine. C.A.T reflexively drew their handguns, and the character held his hands up. “Don’t shoot!” he shouted. “I’m one of the good guys!” When he walked forth, they saw that he was one of the workers. “Who’re you?” Johan shouted back. “Why were you in the mine? Wasn’t the place abandoned by all the workers?” “I’m Dennis”, the worker said. “That thing in there caused a cave-in and cut me off! I’ve spent the last day looking for a way out without him noticing me!” “You saw it?” Tanja said. “You saw the monster? What was it?” Dennis came up to the C.A.T members, with a scared face. “It’s… it’s a giant”, he said. “You’d think they only were myths, but it was a giant. We got into a sort of cave covered in ice, and there he was. He was large and hairy, and carried a hammer as big as three cars together! He killed and ate two of the workers, but the rest of us got away. Not that I got out with the others…” “All right, relax”, Peter said. “You’ll be fine. We’ll take care of the giant. Er, Tanja, can you stay here with Dennis?” “Why me?” Tanja said angrily. “It’s because I’m a girl, isn’t it?” “Yep, that’s right. Come on guys, let’s go!” Johan and Casper laughed and went with Peter into the mine. “They won’t find the giant”, Dennis suddenly said. “Er, why not?” Tanja said. Dennis smiled menacingly. “I am Skodd. Pleased to meet you…” Inside Malmö Iron Mine “Is this SALIVA…?” Johan said, shocked at the puddles of bubbly slime around the half body lying on the ground. “I think”, Casper said. “This guy sure drools a LOT.” “Not really, he’s just big enough to make it seem like it”, Peter said. “Let’s keep moving.” “I still can’t believe I’m going with you right into the mine”, Casper complained. “This is suicide!” “Turn back if you want”, Johan said. “We’re C.A.T. What could we possibly do wrong?” “I don’t know”, Peter said. “Maybe we’re bad at dying?” Johan smiled and nodded. Casper just glared a bit. As they proceeded through the wide, long mine, they soon came upon a gigantic hole in the rock wall. On the other side, they found an even larger cave. It was, like Dennis had said, covered in ice, and was very cold. “Geez, what IS this place?” Casper gasped. “How does it stay this cold?” “That other monster, Fuegosaurus, controlled flames”, Johan said. “Perhaps this giant controls ice?” “It’s possible”, Peter nodded. “What I wonder is where he is…” Then he came to a realization. They hadn’t found any proof of the cave-in… “We have to get out! NOW!” he suddenly shouted and began running to the mine entrance. “What’s going on?” Johan asked, but Peter ignored him and kept running. His Ultran-enhanced physique allowed him to run extremely fast, and emerged from the mine entrance in no time, leaving his colleagues far behind. Outside, he saw Dennis grinning at him. At his feet was Tanja, unconscious. “You!” Peter screamed. “You’re the giant! I thought it was weird for you to be the only one there. There was no cave-in in the mine!” “Found me out, eh?” Dennis kept grinning. “Yes, I am Skodd. I woke up from my slumber when these humans began digging here. And how I longed for human flesh… so sad that I only caught two. Now, it looks as if I got four more! It’s dinner time!” And he emitted an eerie glow, and slowly turned into a hairy being similar to a yeti. In his right hand, he held a hammer. With a howl, the being grew until he finally showed to truly be the giant he was. Peter decided to waste no time… it was time for Ultraman Pole to replace him. Holding his left arm up, and placing his right hand on the bracelet on it, he too glowed and turned into the giant hero, Ultraman Pole! “What is this…?” Skodd boomed in surprise. “What are you?” “I am Ultraman Pole”, was the response. “And I have been summoned to destroy you.” “Just try me, runt!” Skodd laughed. Pole knew that a battle here would be a bad idea, because Tanja was still lying on the ground unconscious, and he needed to get Skodd away from the mine entrance. He yelled out a loud “Hyah!” and kicked Skodd in the chest. While Skodd was momentarily stunned, Pole grabbed him and tossed him further away in the nearby woods. He then jumped after and got ready for the fight. Skodd was not one to give up easily, and swiped with his hammer. Pole dodged it, and then again when Skodd struck a second time. He rolled to the side, and placed himself in a battle stance to get ready to counter Skodd’s attack. Johan and Casper finally got out of the mine. They witnessed the battle of the two giants. “Take a look at that!” Casper said. “That must be the giant. And Ultraman Pole is fighting him!” “There’s Tanja!” Johan pointed. They ran to her and tried to wake her up. Tanja began moving slightly. “W-where am I…?” she moaned. “It’s alright. You’re safe”, Johan said. “What happened?” “It was… it was that man, Dennis or whatever he called himself. He’s really the giant in disguise! Where is he?” Johan pointed at the battle in… no, ON the forest. “Ultraman Pole is here. We’ll entrust the battle to him.” Tanja nodded and smiled slightly. Skodd smiled. “You’re not so bad, warrior”, he laughed. “But I’m going to break you!” “Just try me, runt”, Pole imitated sarcastically. Skodd exhaled a blue mist at him, but Pole sidestepped it. He saw the forest get covered in ice when the mist fell down on it. Skodd did it again, and this time he hit Pole. The side of Pole’s body became covered in super-strong ice, and his foot froze stuck to the ground. Taking his advantage, Skodd landed a blow with his hammer in Pole’s face. It was so powerful, that the ice broke and Pole tumbled backwards, dizzy from the blow. While he was getting up, Skodd blew the mist at him again, and Pole froze stuck. Skodd laughed as he pounded his foe repeatedly, with Pole unable to react. Suddenly, the V-shaped mark on Pole’s chest began blinking red. This was the Ultran’s warning light. His energy was running out. If Skodd would continue his pounding for long, or if he was left frozen in this block of ice, Pole would lose all energy and never rise again. He realized that this was the only likely fate, for he had nothing to put against Skodd’s assault. “That light…” Johan mumbled. “According to A.M.A’s files, an Ultran has a warning light that warns them if their energy is running out.” “What should we do?” Casper said. “We have to help him!” “What can we do against that?” Johan said. “Oh well… you say with Tanja. I’ll take care of this.” With a brief nod to Johan and Tanja, Casper ran to his C.A.T jet, and flew vertically up and then off to the giants’ battle. As Skodd prepared for a finishing blow, a barrage of beams hit his neck. When he turned around to see who dared strike him, a small metallic thing flew past him and shot similar beams at Pole’s icy prison. The ice broke loose his arm, and Pole wasted no time in smashing the rest of it. As he rose, he nodded to Casper in his jet, and gave him a thumb-up. He then turned to Skodd. It was time to finish the battle. “Hyaa!” he shouted as he delivered a punch to Skodd’s face. He followed up with a spinning kick, hitting Skodd’s ribs. Skodd reacted soon, trying to hit the Ultran with his hammer, but Pole did a back flip, avoiding the strike. After landing, Pole swiped his hand, sending a blade of energy through the air. The blade cut Skodd’s hammer in two, and likewise his hand. As Skodd screamed in pain, Pole uppercutted his jaw, sending the ancient giant toppling down onto the trees. Before Skodd could get up, Pole crossed his arms and unleashed his Polium Ray, hitting and disintegrating the old giant. Skodd was no more. Pleased, Pole nodded to C.A.T. “Shuwatch!” he shouted, and flew into the air and disappeared. Soon, C.A.T began flying home, after Tanja had recovered. “I wonder how many more ancient monsters have awakened…?” Casper asked through the communication radio. “Who knows”, Johan answered. “Could be Skodd was the only one, could be he was one of a thousand.” “I don’t care”, Tanja muttered. “But next time, Peter, you’re the one who stays outside.” As they all shared a laugh, C.A.T went back home to Stefansborg, awaiting a pleasant rest.
