EPISODE VII: MEETING AT THE GREAT LAKE, PART 2/2: MURDER A MYTH

May 10th, 2044

Great Lake, north Sweden

Tanja looked at Peter angrily during breakfast.
“How nice of you to keep me company at dinner”, she muttered.
“I got lost in the forest, ok?” Peter attempted, knowing it was a hopeless battle.
“Wow, good excuse”, Tanja snapped. “If you don’t want to hang out with me, then fine, I won’t bother you. I can have BUTTLOADS of fun without you. Toodles.” And she got up and walked away.
“Uh, Tanja”, Peter mumbled. “You forgot your food…”
I think she likes you, Pole laughed.
I’m beginning to NOT like you, Peter muttered. Tanja’s like that all the time. I don’t think she takes this as seriously as she tries to make me think. It’s just an attention thing.
Oh, I know someone like that, Pole said. Back in the Land of Light. She can snap at anything if it makes people turn to look. Real diva.
Oh well. When will we meet Ma… Ultraman Iron?
He wanted to meet us at midday, so we can start planning on how to fight Bogar II.
All right, Peter nodded, I’ll just try to amuse myself.
Maybe you could try and apologize to Miss Oskarsson? Pole suggested.
If she wants to be grumpy, I’ll let her be grumpy.

Taking a walk, Peter tried to think the whole thing through. Max was dead, okay. A bit of a loss, but not a tragedy to Peter. Nobody else knew, anyway. The recent monster trouble, save for Skodd in Malmö, was caused by that girl, and she was aiming to kill Peter so that Pole too would die. The whole thing was pretty weird, but Peter had accepted to help Pole defend Earth, so he probably had no real choice. He had to defeat the monster girl.
Walking on, lost in his thoughts, he bumped into somebody. Looking up, he saw Tanja.
“Ah, out by yourself again?” she asked. Peter nodded.
“Me too”, Tanja sighed. “It’s something with the nature here. Pretty nice place.”
“Yeah”, Peter nodded, “it is. Hey, Tanja…”
“Yes?”
“Sorry for skipping dinner with you yesterday. I guess it was pretty stupid.”
“It’s okay”, Tanja smiled. “I made too much of a deal with it, really. But thanks for apologizing.”
“So uhm… I guess we can do it tonight instead”, Peter said.
“Sure”, Tanja said, still smiling. However, when Peter glanced over her shoulder for a brief moment, he saw the girl in white! She stood next to the water, holding some kind of blue light-ball.
“Hey, YOU!” he shouted, running towards her.
“What the heck?” Tanja exclaimed, but Peter ignored her, ran up to the white-clothed girl and drew his gun at her. She didn’t even flinch.
“Like that”, the girl mumbled, “you don’t threaten me in any way, human. I have nothing to fear from you.”
“What’re you talking about, monster?” Peter hissed.
“Monster?” Tanja repeated. “Peter Ström, I DEMAND an explanation for this!”
“I might give you one later”, Peter snapped back, “but now I have a monster to take care of.”
“Correction, human”, the girl said. She released the blue ball, making it hover away over the water, and turned to him. Her eyes glowed purple, and a small bolt of energy whipped out at Peter, sending him falling backwards.
“You have two”, the girl finished.
“Not so fast”, Tanja suddenly said. She’d drawn her own gun and pointed it at the girl. “You’re gonna tell me what’s going on here… now!” The girl just stared at her for a moment, as Peter rose to his feet.
“That girl”, Peter yelled, “is the one who’s been pulling the monsters outta the hat!”
“What!?” Tanja exclaimed. “HER?”
“Yes”, the girl nodded. “I summon monsters. They are my food. You steal my food from me. I will get you out of my way.”
“Yeah right”, Tanja said, still aiming at the girl. “Don’t you know that you’re putting thousands of people in danger with all this?”
“It is my nature”, the girl responded. “As it is your nature to hinder me.”
“It’s my nature to take you in for interrogation”, Tanja smiled. The girl pointed to the water.
“I believe you will find something more constructive to do”, she said. Tanja and Peter looked at the water and saw a gigantic splash send water flying all over the sky. What caused the splash was something horrific. It reminded very much of a dinosaur, but humanoid in the degree that it stood upright and had muscular arms, and it had hands complete with opposable thumbs, though equipped with sharp claws. It had a long tail which, by the looks of it, was pretty powerful. It had a pointy horn on its snout. The beast’s mouth was a gaping hole lined with, by the looks of it, razor-sharp teeth, and it had several fins on its body, revealing its aquatic nature. It was the true Monster of the Great Lake!
“I believe that a suitable name would be Goruo”, the girl continued. “So that will be its name from now on. Not a creation of mine, believe me, I found him here. He is under my control at present, and I am ordering him to attack.”
“Attack what?” Peter said, astonished at the living proof of the legend’s truth.
“Things”, the girl replied, and vanished.
“Ah”, Tanja gasped. “She’s gone!”
“She can do that”, Peter muttered. “Nevermind that. Call C.A.T HQ. See if they can send anything fast enough to help us. Quickly!”
“What about you?” Tanja asked.
“I’m gonna give it a shot. Several, in fact.” And with a smile, Peter picked up his gun and ran to a small peninsula nearby to get a clear shot at the monster. Tanja stood as if she was paralyzed for a second, then she turned around and sped off to the C.A.T jet.
Goruo screeched, suddenly filled with such a lust for destruction. He looked at the small lakeside hotel, and delightfully approached it. He leaned down and smashed it with his fists, destroying the building completely. Screeching again, he slammed his tail on a nearby gas station and began marching onward to find more things to destroy.
But something drew the beast’s attention. A series of projectiles hit Goruo’s neck, and he turned around to find out who dared attack him. At first, he didn’t see anybody, but then he noticed the little human who was blasting him with something. However, it caused very little damage to Goruo, who opened his mouth and fired a heat beam at the human.
Peter managed to dodge the blast, due to his Ultra-enhanced physique, and avoided the explosion. The monster didn’t see that he survived, which probably was a good thing. He prepared to transform into Ultraman Pole…
But his bracelet wasn’t there! He’d left it with the rest of his things in the hotel! Realizing his mistake, Peter began to run to the hotel and find the bracelet.

“C.A.T, this is Tanja, can you hear me?” Tanja yelled in the communicator.
“Loud n’ clear”, she heard Casper respond. “What’s the problem?”
“Monster!” Tanja yelled back. “The Monster of the Great Lake stuff is true! The thing is walking around wrecking stuff RIGHT NOW, so we need help RIGHT NOW!”
“What?” Casper responded. “We can’t send stuff that fast!” Tanja didn’t reply, standing in terrified realization.
“Sorry, but you’re on your own”, Casper finished sadly. Tanja opened her mouth, likely to swear, but was interrupted when her jet was blasted by Goruo’s heat beam. Tanja was flung several meters away by the shockwave and knocked into the grass. As she looked over at the destroyed jet, she also noticed the hotel’s rubble. A terrible thought struck her.
“What about all my stuff…?”

Searching through the rubble of the hotel, Peter was beginning to panic.
Pole, can’t you use some kind of power to find the bracelet? he asked.
I don’t need to, Pole muttered.
Hey, I thought you were here to help!
Yes, Pole agreed, I am, but… he silenced. Peter was startled to see Pole appear before him in a transparent, human-sized form. He pointed straight behind Peter, and when Peter looked he saw the smashed remains of his hotel room. The image of Pole then vanished. Peter, not wasting time, immediately found his bag, took out the bracelet and put it on, then did the ritual to transform into Ultraman Pole.

Tanja, worried about Peter, decided to ignore looking at the hotel and instead go directly to Goruo’s vicinity to help him fight the monster. She was surprised to not see any laser beams come from the ground, and was worried about his safety. She drew her gun and aimed at Goruo.
“This is for my packing, sucker!” she shouted, and fired a barrage of beams at the monster’s shoulder. Goruo stopped and turned around, noticing Tanja. He opened his mouth to fire his heat beam. The beam fired, and struck…
…Ultraman Pole! The giant blue hero had appeared and stood on one knee in front of her, taking the blast. Now he rose to his feet ready to battle Goruo.
The giant amphibious lizard wasted no time in attacking. Charging the hero, roaring loudly, he was knocked back by a kick. Pole followed up with a punch to the jaw, sending the monster stepping aside, dizzy. As the blue giant rushed towards the monster again, Goruo took his chance. Charging his horn with energy, he fired a beam from it. The beam hit Pole’s stomach, and a gigantic explosion ensued. Pole was flung into the lake by the force, and debris from the explosion forced Tanja to seek cover.
Pole got up, and waded out of the water. Looking at his foe, Pole wondered where Ultraman Iron was. He now knew Goruo’s power, and he was… afraid.
Goruo charged him again, and Pole was too slow to evade him. Goruo knocked Pole back into the water, and jumped on him while he was lying down. In an attempt to help the hero, Tanja opened fire on Goruo’s head with her laser pistol. The action distracted Goruo long enough for Pole to push him off and get up, but now his warning light began to blink.
Pole waded out of the water again, and hurried to get distance between him and Goruo. The monster stood still for a while, taunting Pole with his roars, until Pole decided to attack. He charged himself with energy and held his arms out to his sides, firing his Polium Rain attack, with numerous smaller beams hailing upon Goruo. The monster was hardly impressed, and countered with his heat beam. Reacting quickly, Pole crossed his arms over his chest and used the Soul Shield technique he’d learned from his mentor, Ultraseven, which created a blue barrier in front of him. The barrier blocked the attack and Pole removed it. He fired the Polium Rain once more, and Goruo also continued fire. The two traded beams for a while, with neither being able to truly harm the other, for Goruo’s skin was so strong it absorbed the Polium Rain, while Pole was fast enough to dodge the heat beam. Realizing that the beam-war led nowhere, Pole jump-kicked Goruo and the monster was knocked back slightly, giving Pole time to slam its stomach and punch its chin, so Goruo was knocked down. However, when Pole was about to pick the monster up, Goruo rolled around and fired the beam from his horn again. Pole, though startled, dodged it, but Goruo got up and rammed him down into the water. The monster slammed Pole repeatedly, and this time the hero couldn’t get up. His energy was running so low that a few more hits would incapacitate him completely… forever.
As Goruo emitted a roaring laugh, the girl in white watched. She showed emotion, this time, for she was smiling. Finally, her number-one foe would be defeated, and she could move on to the other one. She gave Goruo a mental command.
Kill him.
The monster seemed to “nod”, and his horn began to glow again. But just as he prepared to fire his energy beam, something knocked him back, and he fell backwards into the lake. The white-clothed girl looked to see who interfered with her affairs, and saw… the other Ultran.
Ultraman Iron had appeared, in his true, Ultran form. He was red in the color, but his chest had an insect-like pattern in gold. He also had golden shoulder-pads, and his helmet-and-mask-like Ultran face was also in gold. He had a metallic Mohawk on his head, and in the middle of the insect-like pattern on his chest was his warning light. He looked at Pole, who was struggling to get up, just as Pole looked up and saw him.
Ultraman… Iron”, he said in relief. “What took you so long?
I was thinking that ‘it’s just a monster, Pole can handle himself’”, Iron said with humorous irony in his voice. “I suppose I’ll have to eat my words. I will help you with this lizard.” And Pole nodded, hopeful again.
Tanja watched in amazement at the two Ultrans. They spoke, in a language she could not understand. But there was something about this other Ultran that clearly signalled about the fact that he was definitely skilled. More skilled, in fact, than Ultraman Pole.
“Good luck”, she mumbled. “Good luck, whoever you are.”
Ultraman Iron turned to Goruo, who by now had risen to his feet and focused on this new foe, more dangerous than the one writhing around in the water. The two titans charged each other, and collided. Goruo and Iron grappled for a while, until Iron delivered a knee in Goruo’s stomach, sending the monster backing away. Iron took the opportunity, and tossed a red ball of light at the monster, which exploded, sending Goruo toppling into the water. He then grabbed Goruo’s tail, swung him a few times, then tossed him into the woods. Running after, he kicked the monster while it was getting up, then did a back flip as Goruo tried to counterattack. Goruo charged his horn with energy and fired his horn-beam, but Iron jumped aside. He then jump-kicked Goruo, downing the monster yet again. Iron then prepared to fire his own signature beam, the Hexanium Ray…
NO!” he heard suddenly. Iron looked around, and saw Ultraman Pole crawling towards him.
What is the meaning of this?” Iron said sharply. “What are you doing?
Iron”, Pole said. “Don’t kill Goruo. He’s innocent.” A moment of silence ensued.
Goruo is being controlled by that girl”, Pole continued. “It would be terrible to kill a monster when for once it isn’t responsible for the damage. I beg of you, don’t kill him. Please.” Iron stood for a while, staring at Pole. He then nodded.
“Very well”, he said. “I shall allow Goruo to live. There is little he can do now, anyway, with his injuries.” As they talked, they noticed that Goruo was silently crawling back into the lake. He got to the center of the lake when he suddenly dove into the water, disappearing completely.
He is a peaceful monster, after all”, Pole said happily.
Our enemy is most certainly gone from here”, Iron said. “I will get away to search for her. You should rest and recover. SHUWATCH!” Iron left into the sky, and so did Pole.

A few hours later, as Casper and Johan arrived to pick their fellow members up, Tanja glared at Peter.
“Peter, I have a question”, she said. Peter looked at her.
“Are you Ultraman?” she asked.
“What? Are you crazy?” Peter smiled. “Of course not!”
“But I think you are. You’re never here when Ultraman shows up, and you seem to know so much about him. And about our mysterious foe. Can you PROMISE that you’re not Ultraman?” After a moment of consideration, Peter nodded.
“Yeah”, he said, “I promise.” As Tanja accepted it and walked away, Peter mumbled “I’m just his host.”
