well Animation is more like Cartoons, you know things such as Tom & Jerry, Foster's home for imaginary friends and what not, but in Anime things tend to get much more violent and there seems to be more profane language. so Anime is much more serious than Animation and in my opinion it is alot more interesting. Anime also always comes from Japan, except for in a few cases, like I know an anime called "Elfen Lied" that comes from Germany originally. but then they Dub it to english.
Superhero cartoons beg to differ.

As do comedy anime.

Anime typically refers to animation in the Japanese style of drawing (Including a mix of realistic and unrealistic body proportions that allow for very clear expression of emotions, etc), even though this style is very varied. This is a rather big difference from Western tendency to go for either mostly realistic or entirely unrealistic.
