Latest DVD watched by Packmule: The Day The Earth Stood Still(2008). I'll be the first to admit that I generally have great disdain for remakes of classic horror and sci-fi films. Despite this I decided to buy the DVD of this film because repeated viewings of the movie's trailers piqued my curiosity.

Like other remakes in the genre of horror/sci-fi this film features obviously updated, and at times very cool, special effects.

Thumbs up:

1. While I still prefer the Gort sentinel robot from the 1951 original movie the rendering of "Gort" in the 2008 remake is decent: he's been ramped to about thirty feet in height and looks more humanoid in physique. As with the original Gort the new Gort, challenged by the military, opens up a serious can of whoop ass on the attacking forces.
I just wish there were more sequences of the giant automaton in the remake film.

2. Jennifer Connelly's performance as "Dr. Helen Benson": she was effective as the scientist(and stepmom) working her behind off to show Klaatu that humanity was worth saving.

3. the overall special effects: I wouldn't call them spectacular but they kept my attention for the most part.

4. the "chalkboard" scene between Klaatu and Professor Barnhardt, which was retained in the remake, the two characters throwing up some mind boggingly advanced mathematics on the professor's chalkboard

Thumbs down:

1. Keanu Reeves as "Klaatu": like Michael Rennie's "Klaatu" this interstellar visitor is meant to be deliberate, stoic and without much emotion. Michael Rennie still managed to project curiosity(about humans) and generate a subtle wit and sarcasm about himself, as he temporarily dwelled among humans. Keanu Reeves was okay in his performance, but still came across to me as bland. His performance seemed sterile.

2. the ending, which seemed somewhat abrupt to me.

My rating of the remake: 6.5/10

My rating for the original: 8.5/10
