I thought about going with real guns so I could get more authentic muzzle flashes, but then decided that it would be too dangerous

I concur with your decision here. I've handled firearms(mostly pistols) and I can tell you that there is absolutely zero room for error or any carelessness when using them. That applies to guns whether they're loaded...or not.
