I watched this the other day [word of warning:do NOT get the US DVD,the sound is terribly mixed and there's hardly any end credits, which means you don't get to hear all of that haunting piece of music. Think I'll get the Australian DVD. Rant over!!]. This is a really action packed Godzilla film with tons of Kaiju footage, and yet I don't warm to it quite as much as the previous two Heisei films. Despite there being loads of fighting,it varies in quality and the final brawl between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla is a bit static and is never as exciting as I want it to be. Also both Mechagodzilla and Rodan are far inferior in my opinion to their Showa counterparts,in both conception and execution [and also I always prefer Mechagodzilla as a machine on it's own rather than being 'driven' by humans]. In fact Rodan is given really short shrift in this film and he looks really shiff when he flies. Generally the effects are great though and I do really like Minya,a vast improvement on the human freak in some of the 60s films. Nonetheless,it's wicked entertainment with never a dull moment. The plot is nice, simple and concise for a change in the Heisei series, the monsters are introduced nice and early [I like a nice slow build up,but sometimes you just want monsters and sod the humans],and the ending is rather sweet, although copied in my opinion from a film called Gorgo,a British Godzilla-type film from the 60s. In fact,I'm almost moved by Minya's situation in this film. I'm a big film music fan,and I think the music score is simply SUPERB,I think it's the best Akira Ifikube Kaiju/sci fi score. The G-Force march is really rousing and Minya's theme rather bittersweet. I think in his previous Heisei scores he copied too many themes from older movies but here he doesn't do that as often,it's a great mixture of old and new music. Although perhaps a little overrated in my opinion it's still a great entry and would have been a fine end to the series, which I think it was originally intended to be. Sadly, they then decided to make Godzilla Vs Space Godzilla which I found disappointing to say the least! Edited by Jonzilla, Oct 4 2009, 02:34 PM.
