Probably both, but she really enjoys being outside and tinkering in a flower bed, so possibly a bit more of the outdoor gardening. Me, I have no green thumb whatsoever. For one thing, I am a bit nervous about inside plants for fear they make outstanding hidling places for all things, creepy-crawly! maniac |

Indoor plants can certainly provide sanctuary for spiders and other insects, though they do far less than, obviously, the outdoor flora. Though you hate spiders Kimi they do perform a valuable service: they provide a natural control of the outdoor insect population. It is fact that the average wandering spider in the continental U.S.(e.g. as a wolf spider or the various varieties of "trap-door spiders) consumes about 100 insects per year. In an average single acre of woods there can be anywhere from 2000-5000 spiders-multiply that by 100 insects per year consumed=significant insect control. Other outdoor spiders that help out are the colorful "garden" spiders, often referred to also as "orbweb" spiders, as well as common house spiders. and the poisonous Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders. Though they creep me out as well, I respect spiders Kimi, for better or worse. I never kill one if I encounter one at work. I scoop them up with a piece of newspaper or a shovel and relocate them to an area where we aren't working. I have encountered some large wolf spiders in my eleven years of outdoor landscaping: the largest one I ever saw was back in 2003. It was mostly a dark gray, and probably about 3-3.5 inches wide. Think that's bad? Try living down in South America, where giant tarantulas are everywhere, ranging in size from 4-6 inches wide to the truly colossal Goliath bird-eaters that can exceed 13 inches in leg span. ![]() Image: the common Wolf spider, which I see most often working outside as a landscaper. They can bite, but are not poisonous or aggressive. |

Norton Internet Security and McAfee Internet Security are both considered very good. I recently came across a list of the top five free anti-virus progams for download: #1 AOL Anti-Virus Shield #2 AVAST -I cannot recall the others, though the author of the article did NOT recommend the one I use-GRISOFT's AVG Free Anti-Virus software. I also use an AVAST anti-virus "cleaner"(also free) to augment my GRISOFT software. NO program can be, IMO, 100% successful, but many are pretty damn close: Norton and McAfee come to mind. When I have some spare $ I am going to reinvest in Norton Internet Security again(it costs about $60 a year). |

dead The photo of the spider you showed is the exact kind that fell on Carol several years back, when she was working with my one brother, painting a house for extra cash. Carol doesn't mind spiders....she doesn't want them on her, but she doesn't as I do, but that puppy stratled her, as she was usign a brush to clean off the siding and it fell on her hand. I have read that without spiders, we'd be overrun with insects, so I respect them in that sense, but wish they could stay clear of my lown personal space. Lee, those 'orbweb' spiders you mentioned, are they the black and yellow spiders? Man, I have got to stop asking questions on spiders, I feel all icky and think anything brushing against me is a spider, right now! The cat just came in, unbeknownst to me and brushed against me and I shriekd and he bolted!

This was the free program I installed in May, following the problems and so far, things seem to be OK. It kind of bothers me that I have bought and paid for virus protection programs in the past and must renew the license each year. I suppose it's only fair, but it bothers me. |

I bought and loaded Norton Internet Security onto my desktop last year after I had just bought this machine, and at the recommendation of my then boss, who told me that in her opinion only Norton and McAfee were worth a damn. I nearly bought F-Secure Internet Security but was told by an Office Depot rep that it was not as good as Norton or McAfee. The Office Depot rep honed me in on on Norton because it had received an official CNET endorsement. I never had any problems with Norton Internet Security, though I found it nearly impossible to communicate with them via email(their site navigation to get to the email "contact us") was virtually impossible to navigate. I got the impression they were trying to make it as difficult as possible to comm with them. Same with calling them, where you would incur a charge, which I considered unfair since I had already paid for their software. Talking with several other people by email, including a local newspaper columnist who writes a "tech help" section in the local newspaper, I was told that many free anti-virus programs are nearly(and maybe) as good as Norton or McAfee, including in their conversations AVAST and Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus programs. My decision to switch was primarily financial, as I simply didn't want to raid my debit card for another $60 right now. So far the AVG anti-virus program is working fine. I also try and do all the things that are absolutely a must to help the virus program out: I check for(free) updats daily, I also run my spyware programs evry other day, I NEVER open any file or email I do not recognize, and, at the behest of the Bell South tech support people, I now turn off my computer completely before I head to work weekdays. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes--> <!--endemo-->

Ick...Ick...Ick! Those are the ones! They always freak me out when I see them. I guess it's a very good thing I never got into your line of work, Lee! :)I remember once at the plant, the department I worked in had to be kept quite cold....30ºF and with very large industrial fans hanging from the ceiling, so always cold and windy. Anyway, not a good environment for insects or spiders and people knoew of my fear....one day, I was working along packing some product, when someone came up from behind and pulled a plastic bag over my head...it took me a moment to focus, but inside was a spider, scurrying about! Let's just say, when I focused on that, my reaction of sheer and total panic, had the smartass who placed the bag over my head, sitting on his behind and wondering what just happened! I reacted so violently in trying to get free, I knocked him over and sent several people sprawling on the floor.

I've played my share of practical jokes on people, and I have been the recipient of the same. I have always considered a prank acceptable if it does not hurt the recipient or anyone around them, does not shame or humiliate them, and in regards to the prank itself, does not include any vulgarity of any kind. I think the person who did this to you was clearly wrong to do this. My only regret is that I was not there in order to remind him, by whipping his ass. <_< |

Just watched the trailer for the film Feast...it looks pretty good. thumbs up I also think I am going to get The Hills Have Eyes on DVD(the remake)...it just won some kind of award. Two people I know who have watched the remake say it's good. Any horror fan who has not seen the French horror film High Tension...I recommend it. It's very good, and has a marvelous twist towards the end. Warning: it contains graphic violence and some gore. There is an english subtitle option on this DVD. thumbs up There have been some rumblings and rumors(on two sites I lurk at) that The Green Slime(1968) may see a Region 1 DVD release. I will be following this "rumor" closely. Other remakes that may(or may not) be happening: remakes of The Wolfman(1941) and Creature From The Black Lagoon(1954). IMO neither should be remade, as they are both stellar films. That's never stopped Hollywood, as we all know. thumbs down |

Overall, I was fortunate to work with the people I did, BUT this was an occurance that didn't endear some of them, at the time. I was still rather new at the job and I think some of them thought it might be funny to see how I;d react....they found out quite fast, that I don't do well in a situation like that. I don't think it's ever funny to pull a prank that involves someone's very worst fears or phobias....it can be downright dangerous! |

The Hills Have Eyes, the remake isn't a bad effort at all, Lee. It follows the original pretty close and adds a bit more to the mix. Although, in my opinion, they left one bit out from the original that I think would have been well placed in this version, but since the remake took a slightly different road to explain why and how this all happened, I suppose it would have been totally out of place. High Tension is a great film....a lot of people feel the ending ruined what would have been a classic, but in my opinion, it still shocked, to some degree, I sicnerely hope the release of, The Green Slime, comes to pass for R1. thumbs up As for remakes of, The Wolf Man and The Creature From the Black Lagoon thumbs down I just can't see them being improved upon, after all, they are already considered classics! Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the classic, The Incredible Shrinking Man being remade with Eddie Murphy.....as a comedy! thumbs down

You are correct, and when I first heard this Kimi, I had a brief urge to vomit. As for the remake of The Wolfman(1941), I agree with you Kimi that it might be hard to improve upon the original, but two things have me actually hoping to see it made: 1) I am a "werewolf"-film fanatic and 2) the rumor is that Benicio Del Toro will play Larry Talbot in the remake. He is a very good actor Kimi. Don't let his muted performance as "Aaron Hallam" in The Hunted(co-starring Tommy Lee Jones) fool you. If you have seen Traffic then you would know what I'm talking about. Del Toro is great at playing troubled, depressed, and periodically violent characters on the big screen which, IMO, makes him a great choice to play "Larry Talbot". thumbs up |

This is the announcement, from March of this year, via MSNBC.com: Del Toro ready to bare claws in ‘Wolf Man’ Remake of 1941 film will be set in Victorian England Updated: 7:59 p.m. ET March 16, 2006 LOS ANGELES - He was the Mexican narcotics officer in “Traffic,” a born-again ex-con in “21 Grams” and a corrupt cop in “Sin City.” Now actor Benicio Del Toro looks forward to playing “The Wolf Man.” Universal Pictures, which just named a new executive team Thursday after a mediocre year at the box office, has tapped screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker to haul the 1941 horror classic out of the closet for a brush-up, with Del Toro to assume the title role. The Puerto Rican-born actor, who won an Oscar for his performance in “Traffic,” would fill the role Lon Chaney Jr. played in the 1941 original as a guy transformed into a nocturnal man-beast by the bite of a werewolf, a spokesman for the film studio said. Unlike the original, however, the remake will be set in Victorian England, rather than in modern Britain, he said. Walker, whose previous screen credits include the crime thriller “Seven” and “Sleepy Hollow,” has spent several months working up new plot twists and characters to make the most of new high-tech visual effects. Universal, which released the original picture and owns rights to the Wolf Man character, said no director is yet attached to the project and no production date has been set. Show business trade paper Daily Variety said producers hope to start shooting the film next year, with the expectation of “Wolf Man” becoming a big summer 2008 release. Universal previously scored huge success with an update to “The Mummy,” another title in its vault of horror classics. The 1999 remake grossed $412 million worldwide and the 2001 sequel “The Mummy Returns” grossed $433 million. Other titles in Universal’s library of monster flicks include “Dracula,” “Frankenstein,” “The Bride of Frankenstein” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” the latter of which is also in development for a possible remake. “We are continuing to mine the library as much as we can,” Universal Studios President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Meyer told Reuters, when asked about the franchise potential of its old monster favorites. “We are headed somewhat in that direction.” Universal’s costly “King Kong” remake, based on the 1933 classic from RKO Radio Pictures, was one of only two releases from the studio last year that crossed the $100 million mark at the box office. But its $217 million domestic gross still fell short of expectations for a film that cost well over $200 million to produce and market. Variety said “The Wolf Man” remake deal grew out of meetings between the producers, Walker and Del Toro, who the newspaper said collects Wolf Man memorabilia. Del Toro’s last big-screen appearance was the crooked cop Jackie Boy Rafferty in “Sin City.” He also earned an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in “21 Grams.” Note, Kimi, that there is, according to this article, a remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon(1954) in the works. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes--> <!--endemo-->

Sounds like you are less than enamored at a remake of the 1954 Universal classic. Understandable. I think a remake of The Wolfman(1941), presumably starring Benicio Del Toro as "Larry Talbot", the man who would be werewolf, has more potential upside than a "Creature From The Black Lagoon" remake. Why? Del Toro is a great actor and, I think, capable of bringing new things to the "Talbot" character. Recall Kimi that this character is a sympathetic character, not just some brainless, mindless monster. Talbot dreaded and abhorred his condition. In addition to Del Toro's casting as "Talbot" I also think the effects will be, obviously, better, especially the transformation scenes. No disrespect to those who made the 1941 original, but they did not have the resources, or technology, available today. In regards to the 'CFBL" remake, I can only believe that an upgrade in special effects would be forthcoming from this film. The plot would remain the same, wouldn't it? The acting and characterization in the original CFBL was solid, and Julie Adams(sometimes billed as Julia Adams), a beautiful brunette, swimming in that lagoon, still makes an impression on me, even now . I wouldn't mind seeing Evangeline Lilly or Eliza Dushku in the remake, in the role played originally by Julia Adams. Mr GreenImage: the beautiful Eliza Dushku, who Packmule believes would make a terrific "Kay Lawrence" in a remake of the 1954 Universal classic Creature From The Black Lagoon ...

I suppose at times I shouldn't be so determined not to apperciate a remake, as is so often pointed out to me, my love of Hammer films is basically supporting remakes! True, but I also think Hammer went out and did a lot of retelling of the tales that often made their versions of films, unique. I often wonder why Hammer Studios, who did remakes of Dracula, Frankenstein, The wolf Man and The Mummy, never attempted a CFtBL remake or even an Invisible Man remake. |
