Perhaps the reason was financial. Correct me if I'm wrong Kimi but wasn't Hammer Studios frequently on shaky financial ground, regarding their "bottom line" as a company? eyebrow |

That probably is the main reason, Lee. I think finances always played a part in the films of Hammer. I do know they had ideas for certain films and were often threatened by the UK film board that certain scenes wouldn't be tolerated and I think that sometimes put them off certain films. A shame, but I certainly enjoy what they did put out. |

Latest Packmule illness and phobia: Post-Halloween Stress Disorder. Symptoms: sweaty palms, cold sweats at night, occasional nausea and a periodically overwhelming sense of boredom and frustration. The causes: a return to regular TV programming now that Halloween is over. Treatment: little treatment is currently effective. In my case getting the "Horror HD" cable channel might ease the symptoms, ...or finding a thousand-dollar bill on the sidewalk today and and using it at Best Buy on DVDs...

That Colts/Patriots game should be a good one! thumbs up It's been far too mild, here and finally, today it's much more Autumn-like and very cool....in spite of the aches and pains associated with cooler temps, I'm loving it! :D We have almost no leaves left on the trees in this area and I haven't done any raking of leaves, so a nice thick blanket of dead and dying leaves. :( Some of my own spam and of no interest to anyone.... -Dad is coming to pick me up tomorrow and we're going to breakfast and discussing the Thanksgiving Day menu. -Tomorrow is also a day I get paid and get to do some Christmas shopping. :D -Carol is working Friday, Saturday and Sunday, which means I get to lay about, watch college football, NFL and do anything I want with the livingroom TV. :D -I'm low on diet Pepsi and food and I'm very hungry! :( |

My newest phobia..... -Christmas! I absolutely adore this time of the year, but I never seem to have time to relax and enjoy the season. When I was able to work, I was putting in 70-80/week up until a few days before Christmas, then I always took vacation time just before Christmas through New Year and while I loved it, it always seemed to be upon me so fast, I couldn't enjoy it. Now, since I;m no longer able to work and lived on a fixed income, it's stressing about getting my gifts for others off layaway and purchased. I always manage, now, but it's tight!

I always have to work extra this time of year because of the leaves-it can tire me out but the two people I do it for are good friends(and pay me well) who have also referred me to others I have worked for on the side. As recently as four years ago it was normal for me to work as many as three Saturdays in a month, and perhaps even a Sunday or two. Now, I try to limit my side work to no more than two(2) Saturdays a month in the fall, and one(1) Saturday a month the rest of the year.

I always lay low at the end of the year, before, during and after Christmas. I'll buy a tree, small 4-5' tall one, decorate it, and just keep my normal routine up of working, then watching some television on the weekends. One thing I am not going to do in December is spend a lot of $ on things, one reason I am getting all my DVD buys out of the way this month. |

They say caffeine will cause headaches, I suffer with a headache every day....24/7/365 and have done so for about 6-7 years, now. They say it's because arthritis has landed in my jaws as a result of my Lupus. Some days, the pain is a dull throb and others it can be a piercing and non-stop sharp pain all day. I certainly sympathize with you and your headaches, Lee. |

We actually put our tree up.....Thanksgiving weekend! Sometimes we'll get the tree on Black Friday and decorate on Saturday, but the past few years, we've shopped Black Friday and gotten the tree on Saturday and decorated on Sunday....I love having decorations and the music playing and film/TV special watching all before and up to Christmas, but come Christmas night, I don't want to watch or hear any of it, because then I;m depressed that Christmas is over! Hahaha We usually have the tree down, the gifts put away and the apartment undecorated on or before New Year's Eve. |

I appreciate the sentiment Kimi. I have suffered from these kind of headaches for all of my adult life, and, according to the doc, it is most certainly because of my personality, and to a lesser degree, diet. I have worked some physically arduous jobs since about 1991, and some of the headaches I get are related to working outdoors(e.g. the heat, during the summer). My doctor believes it is most related to my personality. I am not a laid back person, as anyone who knows me will tell you. I am very demanding of myself, and not very forgiving of my own mistakes(or sometimes others), whether they are personal, or professional. Along with this "rigid"(the word my doc used) personality I also have a temper-even as a kid I had one. As I got older I realized that it would require work, and effort on my part, to address these things, which I have tried to do, on and off, through counseling. Right now I sit down once a month and shoot the bull with a friend of mine I do some side landscaping work for, a guy somewhat younger than me(he's 35) who works FT and also, through his church, counsels people for little or no $. He graduated from college(NC State University) with a degree in Psychology. He's very easy going, a football fanatic like myself, and someone I can talk to with ease. His background and degree, plus his experience as a counselor, is often helpful when I talk to him. And believe me I'm always going to be a work in progess. I have had some seriously negative shenanigans with a handful of individuals, in life, and on the internet, though not recently. My doc has suggested that I need to adjust my personality and outlook on life now...or become a candidate for a heart attack as I get older. Obviously, I'd rather avoid the latter, so I work at it. And keep working at it. After all, what else can I do? eyebrow

Tell me Kimi, are you and/or Carol part of the shopping insanity on the day after Thanksgiving? Here in Atlanta, in recent years, there have been some outbreaks of violence at Wal Marts between early bird shoppers. Last year the skirmishes, and isolated instances of shoppers attempting to jack each other up, were over XBOX controllers. The year before(in 2004), it was over laptops. Sometimes I wonder, Kimi, just what in hell is wrong with these shoppers who take their desire to have a product in their hands to the next level. nonono |

Wow! You and I seem to share a lot of the same characteristics. I tend to be hardest on myself and can beat myself over things for days on end. Some would say I'm far too forgiving of some people and I just set myself up to be hurt, but I do always think there's good in most everyone and keep giving those chances and keep getting hurt....from time to time. I have a rotten temper and I think I always have, but over the past several years, I've taken to throwing things! I've actually broken a few things of my own and felt horrible, afterwards. I know some of my anger goes back to certain point in my life, where I didn't have control to make things better. I do attempt to be even-tempered and not let things get to me, but with some of the family in my life, that's often much easier said than done. I wouldn't trade my family for anything, but some can be very demanding of me and I'm often used as a sounding board, if someone else feels hurt or angry with someone else and doesn't have the ability to tell THAT person.Glad to see you're really putting forth an effort to control the things you can, Lee, best to avoid a heart attack or any other unpleasant health issues, if possible. :) |

Last year, we did shop on 'Black Friday', but after we had studded snow tires put on my Tracker and then it was kind of a relaxing venture for us. We both had most of our shopping done and simply wandered around picking up small items and enjoying being out. I've never taken part of that early-bird madness, though! I ask the same, Lee.....how can anyone get into a knock-down-drag-out-fight over gifts?! Sheesh! I know these new video game systems really push folks right over the edge, too and did you see PS3 is coming out, before Christmas, I believe and someone told me they will be in short supply as well, so you'll probably be reading about more punch-outs at your local Wal*Mart!

No doubt. thumbs down Having worked in retail for three years(1992-1995) before the landscaping industry, as a shoe store manager(for both "Thom McAn" and "Florsheim" companies) I have seen my fair share of rude and sometimes outrageous behavior from customers. Among the more memorable: In 1992, while working as a manager-trainee at a Thom McAn store in a Lenox Square Mall, I personally witnessed a young lad, perhaps 6 years old(maybe 7) answer the call of nature on our sales floor in front of the sock racks. The boy's father continued to try on shoes, watching his son relieve himself on the store carpet, and doing absolutely nothing about it. The manager, "Ann", had gone to the food court, so I calmly informed the man of his son's actions. The father jumped out of his seat, put his own shoes back on, grabbed his son(who had yet finished pulling up his britches), and fled the store, his son tucked under one arm. In 1995, at Cumberland Mall, and while working as store manager for a "Florsheim" shoe store, a customer became very agitated because I would not give him a full cash refund on shoes that, according to his receipt, were over five months old, and also had the corresponding wear on the soles. I offered him a full merchandise credit for what he paid for the shoes, or a partial refund, based on the depreciation of the shoes for 5 months of wear, but not a complete cash refund, which I considered completely unreasonable. The shoes were not defective in any way, mind you. This guy told me he just didn't think they were "right" for him anymore. After raising his voice and trying to cause a scene in the store I asked him to leave. When he refused I ordered my sales associate to call security. This customer attempted to physically stop my sales associate. Big mistake. I grabbed this man and literally threw the guy out of the store. Mall security arrived and he made up this story that I had attacked him. Thankfully witnesses told security what happened. He was detained until police arrived. He was charged with disorderly conduct. I showed up for court on the hearing date, but this asshole was a no-show. I never saw him in that mall again. As a store manager I was often referred to, by disgruntled customers(usually disgruntled over a return dispute), by many adjectives: idiot dumbass stupid **** incompetent asshole-most were directed at me by women, many with their young children present when they would say these things. When it comes to people, and the public in general, Kimi, nothing, sadly, surprises me anymore. thumbs down |

:ph43r: My life has been full of things related to my temper, poor decisions in general about the situations I put myself in, or reactions to others that resulted in "incidents", for lack of better word. Among the most memorable, that I can think of: In the summer of 1985, in North Charleston, SC, I and a few other friends got into a drunken brawl with several biker-wannabes outside a bar called "The Flying Dutchman"(a rock and roll honkytonk joint). Luckily I avoided serious injury, dishing out more than I took. Result: I was arrested, along with everyone else involved, and charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. In order to avoid going to court I paid a substantial fine($300) and was put on probation for 6 months. This arrest was expunged from my record after the 6 months. I was once at a party in Charleston, SC in early 1986 where me and another guy had to wrestle a shotgun out of a drunken party-goer's hands. It was an outdoor affair, with lots of kegs, lots of lewd behavior, loud rock music, and of course a great deal of weed being smoked throughout the crowd. This guy apparently had retrieved the shotgun, a 12 gauge caliber weapon, from the back of his pickup, and actually managed to squeeze off a shell into the air before we could get him on the ground. The sound of the shotgun going off understandably caused a panic among the 200 or so people in attendance. It was all I could do to avoid being trampled to death. Not something I would care to experience again, you can believe that. I was involved in a scuffle with another fan at an Atlanta Hawks-Boston Celtics game here in Atlanta in the spring of 1987. I was wearing a Celtics cap and this guy knocked it off my head. Being in a bad mood because the Celts were losing the game I punched the guy in the nose. I was escorted out of The Omni(the arena's name) and was probably fortunate I was not arrested. The guy I punched declined to press charges, I was told, because he had a record. eyebrow While working at Trugreen Landcare in the summer of 1999 I got angry at something I had done(I think I had inadvertently stepped on the shaft of a pair of extended handle gas shears, breaking the shaft) and took my frustration out on a metal garbage can, slamming it repeatedly against the wall of the company building, adjacent to the dumpster. I was given a written warning. That wasn't the worst part. I had, by my actions, terrified a female hispanic employee who worked on the "flower installation" crew, and who, nearby, believed I was angry at her. It took me talking with her, in private, accompanied by an apology, and a translator, to make her understand that my outburst had absolutely nothing to do with her. The guilt I felt at making this young, and quiet little girl afraid of me was like a bag of rocks around my neck. It was also a wakeup call for me. It was at that point that I decided to re-start counseling, and actually try and take it serious this time. I have had no incidents of any kind with anyone now for many years. Hopefully I can keep this kind of stuff in the past, which is exactly where it belongs. |

I give you a lot of credit for that, Lee. thumbs up I think a bad temper is one of the toughest things to get under control and it's caused me some trouble, but really only with family members. A few years ago, the week of Thanksigiving, the older of my two younger brothers showed up here at the apartment and was extremely drunk and was upset...rightfully so, in my opinion, about actions of his wife....they are no longer together and weren't together then, but while he was away, she slept with an old boyfriend and had a child by him and then lost five of their children to my Mom and step-Dad when my brother and her youngest was seriously injured and almost died. By the time my brother was back in the picture, Mom was down to two or three of their children and she (wife) was constantly calling and trying to track my brother down, then when he would call, her boyfriend would cause problems and hang up and my brother had reached his limit. He was in a very violent mood, which is never his way and I actually taclked him in my livingroom and we rolled around for a few minutes, until I calmed him down. Afterwards, the two of us were sitting out on the front steps to the apartment and my arm was hurting like hell! He was finally calmed down and headed back to his place and promised to call me when he got back home....I went in and checked to see why my arm was so sore and I had this huge gash from my upper arm all the way to my elbow and was bruised pretty good, too. A few days later on Thanksgiving, he stoppde down and we actually alughed about the incident, he said I was the first person to ever give him a black eye! He's never physical, whereas my youngest brother is and we share the same temper, so we've rolled around a time or two, but I've told both brothers, I'm too old and not in good enough health to play like that, anymore, so stop it! :D |

I can, but the important thing is that I rarely do anything more than imagine it. There have been exceptions. Another "mall" incident comes to mind: In 1995, while working as a sales associate at a "Florsheim" store in Town Center Mall, I walked over to an adjacent eatery, "Zbarro", to grab something to eat. I personally witnessed a man, about my age(at the time), berating and threatening an elderly gentlemen because he thought the old man, who I judged to be in his late seventies/early eighties, was going to try and cut in front of him in the line of people waiting to be served. What surprised me was that the man behaving poorly had what was certainly his wife and two small children right beside him-in fact, he had one arm around his wife as he chewed the old man out. The look of surprise and disgust on that elderly man's face is something I have never forgotten. After offering the old man my spot in line(which he accepted), I had a few words with the "family" man with the bad attitude. Because his children were present I did not threaten him or use profanity. I calmly suggested to him instead of disrespecting an elderly person, and in particular physically threatening a senior citizen, he should try someone on his own size and age. He said something to the effect of "I'll be over to talk with you after we get our food." I pointed to where I worked, and encouraged him to come over to my employer for that "talk", or we could take it out in the mall parking lot...away from his family. When his family had seated themselves I walked back over to this guy and got in his face, telling him to think hard about the potential consequences of asking me to meet him in the parking lot. He said nothing, I returned to work, they departed the mall, and I never saw any of them again in this mall. It was my hope, Kimi, that pushing the issue with this asshole might make him think twice, in the future, before trying to bully and intimidate an elderly person. <_< |
